hi all,
does anyone out there use velocity deep v's for cross racing? seems to me that they would be a good choice because they are bomber and have the mud/sand cutting properties..but are they too heavy?

After seeing a lot of folks racing on Deep Vs, I got a set. They're really not all that heavy. But honestly, I just don't like their feel or their handling. I much prefer box section rims for cross, they just seem more nimble.

I use one of the old cane creek cyclocross wheels, which have a 30mm deep alu rim - I'm pretty certain it's a Velocity Deep V, but can't say for sure. That said, the wheel has never been the reason I lost a race.
If you're concerned about weight, the IRD Cadence Aero (aka Niobum 30) is the same profile, in a lighter rim.

They are pretty dang heavy at 520g. I have had a set going on 4 years and they are definitely tough, but if I were building a race wheelset I would go with something lighter.

I second that. Haven't ever had much problem with mud in regard to rims. I use the old Reflex Clincher rims.
