That`s only natural, in any sports commentators would always support or give extra mention of their countrymen.

the question is which English rider are they supporting? Wegelius or Wiggins?

I don't blame them...their always fair about their coverage, but do get a little jacked up when one of their countrymen (bradley wiggins, david millar, ect...) has a shot at a stage

Of course, and they are even playing mostly to the US audience. Have you noticed Versus even has Hincapie listed as one of the "favorites"?

ya, that "favorites" stat is rediculous. the guy in yellow, and the guy to be in yellow at the end of st 8, weren't on that stupid thing.
I cant really stand hearing andreu talk either.

You think Linus and the chicken are serious GC contenders??? I guess they could have put the chicken in there, but at the time the graphic was made (before yesterday's ride), nobody would consider him a favorite....unless it's for the pokadot. Versus is far from perfect, but now your just looking for something to bag on them

It's part of the charm of Phil and Paul to hear them root for the riders of Ye Olde Commonwealth. "A springbok!" "The boy from Canberra!" "The Kiwi!"

When it comes to "homers," though, none can compare to Bobby Roll. I keep waiting for him to tout Tommy Danielson, Bobby Julich or Chris Wherry as his choice for the winner of a stage.

English riders -

Dave Millar - born in Malta
Brad Wiggins - born in Belgium
Charle Wegelius - born in Finland (I think)
Mark Cavendish - born on the Isle of Man
Geraint Thomas - Welsh

:-)

And in case anybody didn't know, that means exactly one place (Wales) that can be considered part of England at all, since the Isle of Man is its own country, with a separate currency and everything.

I think you meant to say "one place (Wales) that can be considered part of Great Britain at all." Wales and England are definitely not the same as they have different flags and such. FWIW, I have some Welsh heritage in me but no English.

English ridersWhat's the proper adjective to describe citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? "English" leaves out the Scots, Welsh, and Irish. "British" leaves out the Irish.

Do we just call them "Limeys" as we call people from the US "yanks" or do we call them "English" or "British" in the manner that we refer to US citizens as "Americans"

Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, England (& the Isle of Man), make up Great Britain (hence the 'Union Flag made up from the separate flags) - The Welsh flag (the dragon) doesn't feature, as at the time of union, I think Wales was classed as part of England.

Historically we're all imigrants anyway, and those 5 riders all hold UK passports (& ride for Team GB).

incorrect.

Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles. Northern Ireland is not geographically part of Great Britain, hence the name "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

You are right. People rarely say GB & NI though (although yes, they should).
I think most of us, without opening the 'can of worms' are happy to be called just British.

The Isle of Man is not part of Great Britain (a geographical entity) nor part of the UK. It is like the Channel isle a Crown Dependency and form a federacy with the UK. Another category is Overseas Territories, like the Falkland Islands for example.

Wales unlike Scotland has never been a sovereign state, it is only really a principality. Scotland has a separate legal system from England. Wales does not.
