I was planning on getting a '07 Scott CX Team but they are out now and I have to wait at least a month for the '08s to come out. I've always had my eye on the Salsa CX and Kona bikes, and really like the look of the Major Major frame. So should I wait for the 08 Scott or pick up the Major Major and put my Ultegra 9 speed tripple gruppo on it?

Depends. How bad do you want the Scott?

Well, not sure I have any "brand loyalty" per se. It just offered the best gruppo for the price of what is available to me. Its a sharp looking bike.

If you want that Major Major better call Bikeman as they only have a 54cm left, if that's not your size then I think you are SOL as the guy had no idea when he would get more. I called a local dealer too and they didn't think they would get any in tome for the season.

Arggg, you are so right, Speedgoat is out too. However I did call Salsa and they had frames in good stock in my size (Chili Con Crosso). Hmmm decisions decisions.

If you don't have a big preference for one frame versus the other, I would then go with what you can first. I believe, that this is your first full year of racing cross and it would probably be beneficial for you to get some extra time on the cross bike. If you season does not start until end of September then it amy not matter, but I like to get sme good cross rides in well before my first race.

good luck!!!

Thanks Spaceman, You're right about my wanting more time on the bike before the season. Part of it was about cost too. The prebuilt Scott is a really good value in my opinion. It seems a lot of bang for the buck to me compared with other turn-key cx bikes. However I do believe that both the Salsa and Kona frames are superior to the Scott's frame, its the added cost of piecing the bike together that I was trying to avoid. I know in the end I will have a bike more my choice too, however. If I ravaged my roadie for its components ( the mentioned Ultegra 9sp tripple), then the cost wouldn't end up being too much more. See anything wrong with that?

Have you considered the Redline Conquest Pro? I built mine up from just a frame, but the complete bike looks like plenty of bang for the buck. I had considered the Scott when I was shopping, but the very short top tube made me leery.

For a first bike I would recommend the redline, they have been making very nice cross bikes for along time now and have awesome price points. Either way all this contemplating is cutting into riding time, and trust me with a cross bike you are gonna want plenty of time to get the bike dialed in. Good luck.

I have something maybe in the works for a more immediate bike. I think I may actually hold out for the Scott then if this works out. Then I will have two cx bikes, one turn-key racer and a Redline framed beater/commuter/pit bike.

I have the Redline Scandium/WCS fork. i got it from Boulder Excel for about 700.00 about 6 months ago. I don't have it built up, but Redlines tend always be really good value and I rarely, if ever, here bad things being said about them, so I would consider one.

As far as putting your ultegra 9 speed group on your cross bike. It is not a bad option, but now of course you don't have a road bike. You may be able to use your cross bike as your road bike and if this will work for you and it provides you with some extra $ then perhaps consider some tubular wheels with nice tires. Outside of a good fitting bike, I find tires make the biggest difference.

Thats the plan at this point, I'm buy a regular Redline Conquest frame and fork from another member. It will eliminate two of my current bikes in a way....my steel mtb commuter and my current roadie which I have never care for anyway. Then I can wait out the next month (&a half?) for Scott to come though with the '08s. I think the ultegra triple gruppo will suit a "go anywhere" bike nicely. Lots of good mild singletrack around Colorado Springs to test it on. Then the Scott can be relegated to being the esteemed race bike and yes I'll pick up a set of tubulars for it as well.

Well, that sounds like a plan. you sound really commited to cross this year! good for you. Now get out there and start doing some suffering.

Thanks, it only took me getting totally creamed in one race last fall to convince me that CX was to be my new suffering of choice.

One of my teammates is selling his Scott Team framesets from last season. He has one 54cm (raced about a dozen times) for $600 and a 56cm (used in training a couple times) for $650. Both prices are for the frame/fork/black King headset. Both are in great shape. Reason for selling is the geometry (short top tube/relatively long seat tube) doesn't work for him. Contact me off site if interested, they're hanging in my shop.
