I don't know, this is the first year I've been into cycling enoguh to watch the tour. Have they ever had a TDF team?

They've never had a team, but there've been a couple of Canadian riders, Alex Stieda and Steve Bauer. Both guys rode in the 80's, and both wore the yellow jersey, Stieda for one day, and Bauer for a couple of days...

Why haven't they ever had a team? lack of funding? lack of enough decent riders?

The teams go by sponsors and can be a mix of nationalities.

If you look at Canadians in the pro tour I believe we have 1 currently. Michael Barry. We had 2 back when Ryder Hesjadl was with Phonak but he's back in the US racing now.
So ya lack of Canadian riders = lack of Canadian team

Road biking just doesn't have a broad enough base in Canada to develop a reasonable presence in pro road cycling. I would say we're light years away from having more than one or two Canadians in Europe, let alone a Canadian team. Canadians are much more prominent in the triathlon and mtn biking worlds. for some reason.

How come there is no Canadian team in the TDF?????
Because CCM helmets are not UCI approved.

Because the TDF is not done on an ice rink.

symmetrics is a Canadian team that is doing well on the domestic North America pro scene. Canada hosted the world championships a few years back, don't think the US has ever done that. Montreal GP used to be a world cup race, a great one day classic. The roots are there but not the sponsors to go onto the protour scene.

It's only funny because it's true.

True for most areas of Canada in winter but I ride all year round in Vancouver.

it has been reduced to brrrrrrr.... eh? no, that doesn't explain it

triathlon isn't exactly a winter sport eh? as has been noted, there are lots of triathletes that have come and continue to come from Canada, including the not so temperate parts

although, perhaps the best one, Peter Reid, came from the temperate part of the country

To add another random factoid to the thread, I believe Leipheimer's wife is Canadian...and of course all those shiny Cervelos (and, yes, some of CSC's bikes are made in Canada; others via their production facility in Taiwan).

is actually leading the North American rankings, I think (ahead of Navigators?). I'll be watching them tonight racing in the streets of Vancouver.

And Michael Barry lives in Boulder Colorado so he is only half Canadian, hey.
