Got home late last night and needed to wash all my cycling clothes because they were all dirty and I had a ride early this morning. Quickly ripped of the clothes i was in and threw them into the washing machine with the rest. Half hour later I start sorting through the wet clothes to separate the line dry from the machine dry stuff. Pull out a jersey and hear a plastic "clank clank". My first thought is that I bumped the agitator with a zipper. Proceed to throw the jersey into the basket and reach into the waher for more clothes. And that is when i see it. My cyclocomputer is sitting at the bottom of the washer, face down. Thinking "Crap, it was in my jersey pockect!" I am a college student, so while computers are not all that expensive it is still a pain to shell out the cash to replace my surely dead computer. I reach in and pick up the computer and flip it over. . . . and was quite surprised to see the correct time looking back at me. I scrolled through all the functions and all the data from my last ride was still there. Went on my ride this morning and everything works fine!

I am quite impressed that my computer made it through an entire wash cycle without dying (though maybe its lifespan was just reduced). And rather surprised after recalling that i have read numerous posts of how many computers die if you ride through a thick fog, let alone give it a thorough cleaning in the washing machine.

And for the record this was a Performance brand, Axiom A08C, prolly cost about $30 dollars originally and i am pretty sure they made no claims of water resistance.

I spose this makes up for the two week old tire that I have to replace due to a huge, gaping gash i got the day before the washer incident.

Just thought I would share.

i have a serfas wireless and one time during a slight down hill i was attempting to change display and by pressing the button it popped out and fell onto the ground in the middle of the street. i decided to wait till i got on the bottom of the hill and rode back up to retrieve it. just as i got to it a sedan pulled out and ran right over the computer which made it pop out and go under a parked car. took me about 5 minutes to reach under and get it. in the end it was totally fine! went under the tire of a care and no scratches or anything and works perfectly fine. glad your comp works too!

I own the perf. model 8W (wireless) and its been bullet proof for maybe 5yrs. If I needed another and could find it, I'd buy another. Problem is I believe they discontinued them a few years back and changed models. By the way those madel 8's were made by VDO, the gauge maker.

Just don't wash garage door openers.

They don't work after that.

Never washed my Garmin Edge... hubby's truck keys have gone through and the remote still worked, though. And his wallet twice.

A pattern emerging? He clearly never checks his pockets!!

jeebus. that's a butt clincher if any of that happened to my or allison's garmins, i'm sure all edge owners can relate.

that being said, thought of buying a more affordable computer makes sense. especially if you don't charge the garmin, you're riding w/o a computer.

Why is your computer in your jersey anyway?

That's the question that I have.

I just avoid this entire problem by not owning a cycling computer at all myself, but hey, that's just me.

I have an old Cateye Cosmos that I have been using since 1992 on numerous different bikes. Its been through rainstorms on friends roof racks at 70 MPH, been in the washing machine, been at the bottom of puddles and 3 foot deep ponds, covered in mud than hosed off. It can't be killed! I'm sure it can't be replaced either.

Probably just an easy place to stash it going from the bike/garage to inside when your hands are full.

I like the info from cyclocomputers. Still really new to the game so I like to keep track of mileage, time, and feet climbed every year. Since I don't race I like to set mileage goals. Though next year I may set more of a time on the bike goal than mileage.

Also nice to have HR info.

This coming from a girl who wants a Suunto watch with temperature and altitude just for fun, though :D

You guys all have it wrong. It's not about durable small electronic devices. not at all. Only wash your cycling clothes once a month... It keeps people from sucking your wheel.
