View Full Version : I don't get some of you people
JohnnyTooBad 07-26-2007, 05:49 AM I really don't understand this mentality of "someone got busted doping, so I'm selling all my bikes and never watching another minute of cycling on tv". Do you not understand that that is the exact opposite reaction that you sould have, and only goes to hurt the sport? Okay, I'm guessing you're not actually serious about selling your bikes, but if you're serious about not watching racing on tv, then you've got it totally backwards. They're cleaning up the sport and getting rid of the bad blood (pun not intended, but it works pretty well!) and you think that's a good reason to stop supporting it? Assuming that you don't have your head in the sand and think that cycling, miraculously, is now 100% clean because the riders signed a piece of paper, and there are some amount of dopers in the peloton, maybe you'd prefer that they ignore that, and not bust anyone any more and just claim "we're clean!"?
Get with the program folks. For cycling to get clean, people will get busted. That's actually a good thing. If noone gets busted it means they aren't trying to clean it up. Because you can bet that as long as big paychecks and fame are involved, people will try to cheat the system. It'll never be completely clean. Don't pretend that it will. There is probably no true athletic sport that's completely clean (I used the word "athletic" to excluse "sports" such as billiards, darts and poker).
So when they bust some superhuman rider for doping, you should be tuning in and supporting the sponsors, not running to put your head back in the sand, yelling "OH, how awwwffuulll!:cryin: "
BTW, if you do turn the tv off because of this, you can bet you (and the rest of us) won't have the opportunity to turn it back on next year, because Versus will drop the coverage. Go ask the Germans how that's working for them.:mad2:

It depends on the bike -- your bike.
If you have a nice, new high end bike that will fit me and you don't want to ride anymore, great. Just give your bike to me and start watching baseball/golf/football on TV.
Otherwise, I agree with JohnnyTooBad. It makes no sense to support the sport while the dopers are in it and then abandon it when they are thrown out.

Stop watching cycling and follow the Barroid Bonds home run chase or the NFL.
Makes perfect sense to me. :mad2:
velocipede 07-26-2007, 06:53 AM Hold up... how's that going to work? If they stop watching cycling because of the doping, then how can they get behind baseball (steroids), football (steroids, pit bull fighting, drunk driving, etc), or golf (is it true some of the pros take roids to keep up with Tiger Woods???)
or is it just that pro cycling cheaters are really starting to get caught?

Every major sport has dopers...The only difference is that cycling is very aggressive in their rooting out the culprits...makes me more proud to be a cycling fan that the sport is willing to do whatever it takes.

I have a baseball bat and gloves you can buy from me.
Thanks.

And we have the winning answer!!!!!
slowrider 07-26-2007, 07:16 AM I compare this to pro bodybuilding contest. For the people who like it, they want to see the biggest guys win. We all know they are roided to the max, but people love it. Could Landis or Vino thrill us all natural, maybe? But would we watch. The hardcore fans, yes. Casual fan? Same thing with Big Mac, Sosa, and Bonds. Did I watch, hell yeah. Did I have my doubts about what I was watching. Yes. but I was entertained. To this day, one of the most amazing sporting events I watched on tv was Ben Johnson smoking the field in the 100 meter dash in the 1988 games. 20 years later his time (9.78) is just off the record. I'm no longer surprised by anybody getting caught cheating. But I still love sports.

My post didn't come across well. I am saying that the cycling haters are sheeple:
They will watch all the other sports without a peep. Remember the original Puerto reports? Footballers and atheletics (tennis, track) as well as cyclists? And the stick and ball crowds here in the states?
Cycling is being hammered simply by a media driven frenzy, while most sports are getting somewhat of a free pass.
jupiterrn 07-26-2007, 09:16 AM I agree with the rooting out of these asshat dopers. What I am having a tough time with is there does not seem to be a uniform way of testing or when testing is to be performed. I think if was uniform then more people would understand and get behind the testing and have more confidence in the athletes. I think if cycling had a pretty transparent plan like lets says Nascar to catch cheaters, more people would feel more comfortable with the results. I am amazed at the information the average Nascar fan can give about there racing and how they try to level the playing field and the penalties for cheating. I will not sell my T-Mobile TCR because I love to ride and I will still watch the tour if I can find someone that will broadcast it. Hopefully, the younger generation of riders just coming up will have more integrity. DOPERS SUCK!

In a recent interview one of the Pro's noted that he knew of at least one individual he knew of that was taking steroids on the tour. However, that's not the PED of choice in golf. They take drugs to help them relax and become more focused so they can tune out the galleries of fans and focus intently on the ball. That's why you are starting to hear a call for drug testing even in golf of all sports.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.....No sport is clean, they all have cheaters.
rcordray 07-26-2007, 09:32 AM I think we should all start following a sport that prides itself on its integrity:
The NBA
