View Full Version : 1986 LOOK Hinault Reynolds 753
Dave Hickey 07-27-2007, 03:15 PM I've been on vacation this week and between a whole lot of riding, I've had the chance to work on some of my bikes..
I've had this bike for around 3 years. It look me 5 years to find this frame in my size(only 500 were made). This week I decided to make it more period correct. I had a Dura Ace 7400 crankset and BB laying around so I swapped it out with the 7410 cranks that were on the bike.
The only thing that isn't period correct is the headset. It's a 90's 7410. I have a 7400 but I haven't changed it yet...
Here are the particulars
Frame/Fork- LOOK Hinault Reynolds 753 50cm frame- I had NOS replacement decals that I put on in place of the originals. The paint is original
Drivetrain- Dura Ace 7400 7 speed uniglide- La Vie Claire switched from Campy to Shimano in 1987 so this would be correct for the 1987 version.
Bars/Stem- Cinelli XA stem with Giro bars.
Brakes- Dura Ace 7400 with 7401 levers with rare white hoods...
Wheels- Matrix rims laced to 7 speed Dura Ace hubs
Saddle- Regal
I'll admit that this bike is usually wall art... I spent too much time searching for it and collecting the parts...
Dave Hickey 07-27-2007, 03:16 PM A few more pictures...
boneman 07-27-2007, 03:36 PM I still remember you looking for and then getting this bike. It still looks good although now you are into the details that only a true period fanatic/Dura Ace person goes. What about the wheels? I don't recall you using tubs. They surely were not on clinchers during those days.

Noooo! You've got to ride it! You can pretend you are the badger, playing your cat and mouse games with that wimp, Greg Lemond...

singlecross 07-27-2007, 05:05 PM I agree with FBB... ride it. Without movement it is incomplete, even as art. It was born to move. If it is ridden, it is a bicycle. If it is not ridden, you've got a nice piece of sculpture there.

Dave Hickey 07-27-2007, 05:34 PM I ride it but it's only for special occasions... I might take it out 3-4 times per year..
If I replace the bone crushing 20c tires, I'll take it out more....:)
austex 07-27-2007, 08:02 PM What bar tape is that?

It's just some no name red ribbon...There is no padding at all...
Pablo 07-28-2007, 06:27 AM Wow. Now that is a killer bike.
spu2261 07-28-2007, 08:13 AM Ah, that is IMHO, the prettiest bike ever. Takes me back to the days when bikes were steel, and Frenchmen won the Tour...
I just noted something, Dave. To make it totally period correct, you have to change those pedals...
merckxman 07-28-2007, 11:12 AM I met Bernard at the Tour about 10 days go; he was looking very well. Riding in France I also saw a beautiful "Hinault" modern frame. I don't believe he builds them but it was very nice.
Absolutely beautiful bike, Dave!
Couldn't resist scannnig and posting this photo of Hinault's bike. It appears full-page at the end of Hinault's book "Hinault by Hinault," published by Winning Magazine shortly after Hinault retired in 1986.

Whoa, Hinault must not have known that he had his stem up too far. Just ask all the stem police up in Bikes, Frames and Forks.
IcemanYVR 07-28-2007, 07:22 PM Wow Dave, that bike is absolutely stunning. The work you must have put into building that bike and finding the parts.
I would love a project like that, one of my favorite bikes from that period is the PDM Concorde.
Fivethumbs 07-29-2007, 10:38 AM That is a beautifull bike!
Richard 07-29-2007, 01:30 PM Drop dead gorgeous, Dave. Brings back fond memories of the 1986 Tour and the epic battle between the naive LeMond and the treacherous Hinault. I still have the Winning magazine special edition coverage of that Tour.
Plus DuraAce 7400 was the nicest group Shimano ever made. Got me off Campagnolo (if only temporarily.)

I have the DVD of that tour...It was one of the best...After watching it a hundred times, I still think Hinualt was going for the win....He wasn't trying to help Lemond
DannyBoy 07-29-2007, 05:00 PM Oh yeah, it could have 1985 or was it 86 kit being C Record with Cobalto's........
My interest in cycling was at it's absolute peak in the mid 80's and the Badger was and still is very much my hero. I repeatedly watch the DVD of that '86 tour.
I lusted after that very bike myself so I'm very jealouse. I also loved the low pro TT version. Also liked Hinaults silver framed number too.
Well done you lucky SOB.
And for the Badger fans amongst you a few action pix to bring the memories flooding back!
