View Full Version : Loose Front Hub Bearings or Not??

I have a question I need some advice on.

I have a relatively new Reynolds Alta Race wheelset with about 1k miles on them and after a recent ride I noticed that the front wheel had a slight amount of play in it when moved side to side. The rear was solid.

I took the wheel off and it spins freely and the bearings feel tight.

I took the wheel to my LBS and they said that there was nothing wrong with it and this is very common with hubs with sealed bearings including Zipps.

Is this anything to worry about, leave it alone or get the bearings replaced??

Thanks;

Kevin

Isn't there an adjustment for that on the hubs? On my Mavic K-ES hubs there is a small plastic spanner to fit indented holes on one side then a allen key to the other side and the play can be adjusted similar to Chris King hubs. Seems to me that just a hint of discernible play gives the best roll but you can take it completely out if you want to.

Assuming this is the same hub that's on my set, there is a small hole on one side of the hub shell that's used to access a threaded clamp with an allen screw. It's used for adjusting preload on the bearings, you can loosen the allen head and screw the clamp down closer to the bearing.

Some bearings do have some play IN the bearing, so you don't want to just crank down on that, or you will put unecessary side load on the bearing. However, I don't notice any side to side play in my bearings, and they run smooth.
