View Full Version : Champ requests xtra testing....
bonkmiester 08-02-2007, 12:43 PM some pro cyclists should take a cue from this lady.....
this is about 40 yr old Dara Torres who just took the nat'l Champs for the 100 meter Freestyle...15 mo after delivering a child too...
"...recently she came out of retirement to claim five medals in Sydney and plenty of people were suspicious of her performance Down Under, figuring that it must have been aided by performance-enhancing drugs."
"It's too bad that people in the past used drugs," Torres said, "so when someone does something that's a little out of the ordinary, they get tainted too."
"Looking to silence any whispers this time around, she went to USA Swimming and asked to be subjected to extra testing, including blood work. In the past six weeks, Torres has been tested three times."
"It's a pain," she said, "but it's worth it for all the naysayers out there. Here are all my drug tests and they're all negative. Those guys can say what they want, but here are the facts."

fyi....the quotes, bits & pieces, and story come from the AP wire service and other sources googles up Dara Torres in teh news (http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=dara+torres&btnG=Search+News)
asgelle 08-02-2007, 01:23 PM Not to cast aspersions against Dara Torres, but asking for additional testing might show an athlete is confident of passing the test but that isn't the same as not doping.
Pablo 08-02-2007, 01:28 PM Geez. So we can implicate someone if they get tested or avoid getting tested. What a super philosphy.

Maybe super, maybe not; but in no way implied in what I wrote.
jupiterrn 08-02-2007, 02:01 PM Good for her but I think having the baby was just a plot to keep her Hemoglobin levels up. The baby was the doping agent.:D

...well i did read pregnancy is a "non-negative" and a voilation...more specifically a method of preggers / abort / preggers / abort....which is a possible method to keep those levels up...

true......
...but if the tests go beyond the screening tests...
for instance skip the Hemat. levels adn go right to the test for rEPO
or
skip the T/E ratios and go directly to IRMS to look for exoT
make sense?

Yes! And I hope that's what the authorities do at the World Championships in Stuttgart.

...I think the UCI did it to Mayo....McQuaid said they were suspicious of him at Giro and were "watching him"...Gripper has been saying they aren't playing by the "old rules anymore"...prolly how they caught Vino too...

...you might want to reconsider that offer...:D

I know you didn't say that, but it seemed like the logical extension of the argument. My apologies if I implicated you in an extreme position.
My feeling on the issue, aside from the tendency to assume that people dope, is that you can't prove a negative, and yet people jump all over cyclists for not being able to conclusively prove they haven't doped.

...looks like they are going to do that....
...did you read that piece this am?.....like 2x the tests and some "special" tests too...
...here (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/070802/sports/cycle_germany_worlds) is the article......
an excerpt:
"The controls are so all-encompassing that no one will dope and not be caught," said Susanne Eisenmann, chief of sports for Stuttgart. "This is a real chance for a new start."
Eisenmann said controls during the Sept. 25-30 championships will be increased to 150 from the 60 originally planned, with 200 more tests leading up to the event.
Excellent! Thanks for the update and the linky :)
