Sooo *when* (not if) I brake down and buy a new set of wheels they will most likely be carbon... I know i need different pads with them, but will the new pads work on my shimanno rims????

Some brands yes some no? I dont want to deal with changing pads 2x a week to race.

Are the Shimano rims carbon or aluminum? You don't want to use the same set of pads for both carbon and aluminum rims, as bits of aluminum that wear off get embedded in the pads.

For carbon rims, I'd just go with Swiss Stop yellow.

it only takes 10 minutes to change brake pads. so for carbon rim, use either cools top or swiss stop. for alum. rim, just regualr brake pad and just swap them when changing wheels.

if your going to switch wheels often I would get an extra set of brake pad holders as well. It speeds things up.

I find getting new pad holders is faster than taking the pads out every time too. maybe your just really good at getting the pads out and i'm/we're not.

+1 for swiss top yellow.

Get another set of holders. As for the pads, I used the swissstop yellow and they were fine except for heating and melting on long downhills in the mountains. They are great in the wet, though. I don't use my carbon wheels in the wet, so I've switched to Bontrager cork pads and I love the modulation and complete lack of squealing (another problem with the Koolstop and Swissstops).

Of course in the rain, it's like there's nothing there...

I suspect you have never changed a set of Campy style pads... ? An extra set of pad holders is absolutely the way to go.
