View Full Version : Stage Race Nutrition
bopApocalypse 08-13-2007, 10:28 AM Maybe against my better judgment, I'm doing my first stage race this weekend - 50 mile up+down road stage Sat morning, Crit Sat afternoon, 50 mile flat road stage sun morning, 11 mile ITT sun afternoon.
Any suggestions on what to eat? There's not much in the way of restaurants in the area, and the hotel room has a microwave & fridge, so some resourcefulness will be required.
the 'plan' so far:
fri dinner- go out somewheres on the way in. probably something pasta-ish.
bfast - either the standard cold cereal + fruit, or bagel+cream cheese
lunch - prob. deli sammich, light munchy stuff, dried fruit etc.
sat dinner - pre-grill some chicken, do some noodles+sauce thing in the micro...
Suggestions? Other Advice?
homebrew 08-13-2007, 05:06 PM Pre cook some food so you can heat it up as needed and still get some rest. Fruit, nuts make good snacks. I would also think about recover drinks, or make your own. Eating out in such a situation is risky IMO.

You're not eating enough food. That's my advice.
You want to fueled up for these races, you got to eat more food. That's just my 2 cents. More carbs also, less protein (save that for after). Cold cereal and a bagel ain't gonna cut it for even a 50 mile race.

Fair enough - thinking about it, the above is pretty similar to my current diet, and I'll probably burn at least 3000 cal just riding each day this weekend.
Eating during the RR stages is not an issue - I do just fine with GU and ClifBars - just need to remember to eat enough. I don't plan on eating during the crit or the TT; both are short enough that I should be able to just fuel up before, and drink during.
It's the meals between that I'm concerned about. After doing more looking around, it seems like I should be targeting low GI foods for breakfast and dinner, and higher GI foods for lunch/immediately after the afternoon races. Seem reasonable?

So what did you end up eating, and how did it work out for you?.
trener1 08-26-2007, 02:35 PM So I will be doing the Green Mt Stage race later this week, so I am looking for suggestions, as recovery over 4 days will be a huge factor.

Fortunately there are plenty of great places to eat out around the GMSR (Waitsfield, Moretown, etc etc) - and you should support the local places :)
trener1 08-26-2007, 04:15 PM I'll actually be staying in Rochester, but that's another story...
