View Full Version : Leg/Hip issue...help!
gibson00 08-15-2007, 12:45 PM I posted this on the WW forum as well, hoping I might get some info here as well.
I've been having this prob for quite some time, which prevents me from sitting comfortable on the bike. I guess the best way to describe it is that my right upper leg and hip seem to point inward, whereas my left side is fine. The result is that I always feel like I'm sitting crooked on the bike, and both legs feel like they are pedaling differently.
If I consciously sit myself straight and centered on the saddle, this is when I feel like the right leg is kind of shorter, as it causes me to move my right side forward on the saddle in order to straighten out the hip and leg, resulting in my body pointing to the left.
So I'm pedaling with a good straight left side, but my right hip and leg are moved forward and pointing inward.
I've had my leg bones checked, and there is no detectable length difference. Am I dealing with severely tight hip/hamstring muscles here?? I've been to the chiropractor as well as an osteopath, and neither have done anything for me.
If anyone has any suggestions or has had and solved similar probs, please let me know how!!!
This is really ruining cycling for me as I just cannot feel comfortable or pedal in a nice symmetrical fashion.
OldEndicottHiway 08-15-2007, 01:21 PM Hmmm, I know the feeling! But I do have one leg that's minutely shorter than the other. It caused stress in the right knee and hip and frankly I wonder if the problem really originated in the hip anyway. If the lumbar-sacral region is out of balance/misaligned this over time, I would think, would cause muscles to tighten on the compensatine side, and further excacerbate the problem.
I would think even legs that are not perfectly aligned would cause one side to compensate for the other, further stressing as well. In a crappy analogy, when your "front end isn't aligned" the tires go bald on the sides compensating for the imbalance.
I Finally experimented with different cushioned insoles in my right shoe and now I no longer have that freaky falling-off-to-one-side feeling. My pedal strokes are markedly improved and I have less ham-string tightening/discomfort over longer rides.
Also put on Speedplay pedals as I am unequally pigeon-toed. Not a huge fan of these pedals BUT, my knees feel great now and I can shake my feet around a bit if they get a little numb in the toes (old-people problem). When I ride the fixed pedal-setup on my trainer, my right knee feels torqued and a bit sore laterally, after the ride. That reminds me I must go adjust it. :)
Good luck!
Olancha 08-15-2007, 03:16 PM There are panelist in the "Form and Fitness Q & A" section for cyclingnews.com that discuss pelvic asymmetry and leg length discrepancy. Here are some examples http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/?id=2006/letters06-26#Pelvic, http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/?id=2005/letters10-17#Leg. There are many others Q & A's that might give you some ideas on how to approach this problem, http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/.

I have a similar if not the same issue. I have tried the following:
Chiropractor
Bike Fittings (2 different places)
Stretching
Yoga
Core strengthening
None of these have worked for me. I talk to a friend of mine today, and she suggested working on more alignment and strength and evening out the core. I'm sort of at my wit's end myself at times, but most of the time I feel "OK" on the bike, but still not quite right.
I'll let you know if I find something that works. I also have no leg length issues and what not.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
I did check out some of the pelvic assymetry stuff, and mostly it recommended an FSA seatpost that could move side to side. I did get one, but it didn't really help at all. I even contact the author over email, and he didn't seem to think it would really be a solution either.. :(
It feels like I have a completely different pedal stroke on each leg.....<sigh>....

Gibson, did you check the links Olancha gave you below? I was unaware of that particular forum and in my opinion it's a wonderful resource. Read through the posts carefully and you'll see some top notch professional advice for problems such as ours.
I think if you pose your problem to these guys you just might get the help and solution you are looking for. If you do correspond with them, let us know here, I'd love to see what their advice is.
Good luck again, and don't give up!

Yup, had a look. It does sound like what is plaguing me. Hip forward and down. Although unless I missed it, it doesn't really suggest much of a treatment/solution for it. I do have an appointment with a new physio on Monday, so maybe they'll have some ideas.
