I am building up a CAAD 5 frame and this being the first time I have ever had to deal with integrated headsets, I went to a LBS that is a Cannondale dealer. They sold me an Aheadset headset that uses 36 X 45 degree cartridge bearings. While waiting for other parts to arrive that I bought online, I started looking at prior RBR posts to learn as much as I could. The issue of compatibility between the different brands of headsets came up several times, with some saying no problem and others pointing out that it has to be a specific type. The original headset this frame was spec'ed with was a Campy Hiddenset. If you go to Cane Creek's website, you will find that they make a specific headset for this. The models designated for example IS-2i or IS-8i are designed to replace a Campy. I decided to see what Cannondale themselves said and this is their reply......
Our road bikes that feature an 1 1/8 inch head tube are Campy, Ritchey and FSA compatible. Bearing angles need to be 45 x 45.
Straight from the horses mouth. I did find one post where someone said exactly this and listed several types. Sorry, I can not remember exactly whose post that was, but it made sense, got me to thinking and saved me alot of trouble. I almost bought a new Cane Creek IS-2 off eBay that showed an IS-2i in the picture, but with all the confusion on this issue, I emailed the seller and found that he used a picture from Cane Creek's website and the item was actually an IS-2.
