View Full Version : Which shoe manufacturers tend to fit wide?
csh8428 08-22-2007, 10:26 AM I'm looking to get a new pair of cycling shoes.
I've only had diadoras so far and was wondering which other show manufacturers tend to fit wide.

Shoe fit is the ultimate try before you buy thing in cycling, even more so than saddles.
Wide shoes:
Northwave: Wide, also larger in general at a given size. Example, I wear 43.5 in Sidi and 42 in NW.
Shimano: They have E-width in the R215 and R151 carbon shoes.
Sidi Mega: Wide, but wider all over. Some might find the heel area too wide if only forefoot width is an issue.
Carnac: Older Carnacs were very generous in the forefoot with a narrow heel. Legend, Ellipse, Quartz in particular. The newer models (2005 onwards) I am not so sure of.
ahumblecycler 08-22-2007, 01:20 PM I had the same issue/problem of needing a wider toe box. I ended up getting the Specialized Carbon Pro late March '07, since I have spinned over 4,000 miles with no issues. To be honest, they are more comfortable than all my shoes except my special Nike Airs, and even then that is a close one.
slowdave 08-22-2007, 04:59 PM i have wide forefoot and narrow heel. i am currently in a set of spec pro road caron sole velcro and buckle shoes very very good old shoes were sidis great but just too narrow in the toe box, lake were pretty good. try em on and you will be ok
danl1 08-22-2007, 05:01 PM Lake shoes generally run wider than the Italian-lasted brands, and they make some models that are specifically wide.
cyclust 08-22-2007, 05:28 PM Lake offers a few models in wide sizes, but to my wide feet, Carnacs are the best bet. They don't offer "wide " sizes, but they run wider than even the Lake wide shoes.
bigjohnson54 08-22-2007, 06:03 PM I just bought a pair of Specialized Carbon shoes, they fit my EEE feet just fine and they are comfortable. I just finished a 120 mile solo ride today and my feet were fine.
Roger H 08-23-2007, 04:46 AM My feet aren't real wide, but after trying a bunch of different brands, they seem to fit the best, for me.
The Flash 08-23-2007, 06:19 PM Specialized, Specialized, Specialized....
Nothing is close and I have 4E feet....always comfy and they have a wide range of options.

toonraid 08-24-2007, 04:01 AM I second that, I have specialized for both my road bike and MTB and I find them a better fit for my wide fit than others I have tried in the past such as SIDI and Shimano. I wear 47 specialized but found that I have to move to 48 with the other two (even then my toes were being squeezed).
DIRT BOY 08-24-2007, 09:12 AM I went the DMT route due to a pro-deal. They fit like SIDI but with a slighty wider toe box. If this is all you need (Toe Box), then they might fit the bill.
EDIT: these wree NO BETTER than SIDI in the TB.
SteveAustin 08-24-2007, 04:08 PM Well worth looking at spesh
boneman 08-24-2007, 04:32 PM The original poster mentioned Diadora's. I did not find them to be very wide but they are a bit wider than standard width Sidi's in my experience. Also no mentioned of shoe size or width.
I wear a US size 7.5 E and these are shoes I use or have used:
I have a number of pairs of Northwave Evolutions and just got a pair of Aerators. Both shoes are wide in the toe box and the toe box has decent height. This is not the case with all Northwave shoes as I have two other models which are definitely on the narrow size with a low toe box. My size difference, Sidi to NW is 1.0 size smaller for NW. Also, the NW's are fairly light. I like the NW's because they fit and are comfortable on my feet. Also, they are easy to find on close out as I generally buy last year's model. I just don't find shoe technology making me crave the latest model.
I have a pair of Shimano R215-E's. Really high quality shoes but expensive so try to find them on close out or EBay.
Sidi Mega- I don't find them to be wider all over but that's for my foot. They are comfortable and light.
I also have the Carnac's, Lemond/Legend. It was probably the first shoe that actually offered decent fit. Sizing was similar to NW for me although I did find them to be heavy. Also annoying was their changing the cleat interface during the model life.
A lot of people have mentioned Specialized in the last few years but I've not tried them.
To the extent possible, you need to try them on for fit.
davidka 08-24-2007, 06:58 PM Go to a Ski shop and get a proper measurement. Sometimes a wide foot is in fact a foot with a long arch/short toes. If you use a standard Brannock device (measuring device found in shoe stores) the tell tale will be an arch length that is longer than the toe length, ie. 10.5 at the toes, 11.5 at the ball of the foot. You can learn a lot from a decent ski boot fitter and they are usually more than happy to help in the summer when the business is slow.
If you have the long arch/short toe foot type, the answer can be a larger size in a narrower fitting shoe.
mytorelli 08-24-2007, 09:37 PM I have the shimano r300 shoes. Their half sizes seem to fit wider feet. I have somewhat wide feet and they fit great. They also fit well because of the custom process. I definitely think the money is worth it, but make sure it fits well because it is a lot of money.
