I'm ashamed to say this, but I've never actually worn a cycling cap. They look cool as hell, and I'm young enough to wear one and still look "trendy".

Whats the etiquette involved? While racing, cap under helmet? Under helmet of same color? Clashing colors good or bad? Assuming I don't have a team kit complete with cap, whats a safe cap to wear?

:mad2:

Flat bill and tilted a bit to the side. Word.

i agree with the flat bill, but see no need to tilt it to the side. that borders on fixed gear hipster. check competitivecyclist.com, they have an assortment of good looking ones, including ones without team branding. the rapha ones look damn nice, albeit a little pricey.

I absolutely love cycling caps, very handy during early morning rides in the spring and fall when it is a bit chilly. And of course they just seem to be at home during cyclocross season.

Bill straight forward always for me too.

Cycling caps were worn in a day before helmets and were designed to advertise the sponsor and keep the mud out of the eyes and sun off of the back of the neck. Unfortunately they have been appropriated by urban hipsters trying to look cool and different in exactly the same way as their buddies. If you are going to wear one, wear it right. You have to either perch it on the topcap of your skull, barely holding on, with the brim flipped down to just about the eyebrows. Or you have to have it, once again, barely attached to the had wit the brim flipped up. No mashing it all the way on the noggin and definitely not backward. Of course, if you actually wear a cycling cap for the inherant function it has built into it, you'll soon develop your own style on how it should be worn depending on the conditions at hand, and that of course will be the ultimate in style, not what some barrista in a white studded belt thinks it is. Check out the old school style. Don't even think you can pull this much panache.

Now if you want something that's warm, retro and stylish, give the caps from Shaun Deller Designs (http://www.shaundeller.com/) a try. He tends to make his from recycled suit material. So that 'banker grey' wool cap just might have been some banker's suit jacket at one time.

FWIW, I have one of the 8-panel caps in khaki cotton. Sweet.

Yea, I agree. And a way better price then the Deller caps. $45 for a cap.... wtf?!

I wear this one a lot as cheesy as it may be. It has a great sweatband and a shallow brim that actually doesn't cover your entire face and block your sight when you flip it down.

+1 Walz caps. The wool caps are just great (and warm). Wear the cap however you want. If you're fast, you can pull off any fashion statement with ease. In the end, they're just funny looking hats!!!

PS cycling caps are also great for keeping water out of you eyes in a rainy/muddy paceline

Unless its 90 and humid as heck, I use one. It wicks the sweat nicely. I designed the ones that our team uses so they are littered with sponsor logos and schweet colors. Too bad our team changed colors. I wear mine to train and race, especially cyclocross where the bill can help deflect mud and grime......

Deller's website lists the basic caps for $30. The wool hats with ear flaps and bells and whistles are a bit more. Unless I'm missing something, that's cheaper than a mass produced Surly wool cap and hand made to boot.

I do even over 90. It keeps the sweat from running onto my shades.

Deller's caps are cheaper then other over priced caps out there. It doesn't mean it's cheap.
