I also posted this over at weight weenies, but I think I might get more traffic here.:)

Does anybody know anything about the cranks that come with the 2008 Specialized Tricross S-Works Module? There seems to a surprisingly lack of information about them on their website.

Are they any good?

130 or 110 (from the picture on the website, it looks like 110, but it is hard to tell from a picture)?

Traditional BB, or outward bearings?

This will be my race bike for the year, if I can get it in time before the season starts. If I can't, then it will likely be an 07 carbon.

Thanks is advance.

I am looking at page CM-16 in the dealer book and the the crank looks a lot like Campy's Ultra Torque. It is available in 130 or 110 (the Tricross should be 110 since it is a 48/34). Claimed weight for the compact version is 623g for a 172.5 including all hardware. Bearings are described as "self adjusting 42mm cartridge bearings" that fit "Specialized frames with oversized bottom bracket shells".

Spiders are available separately, so it looks like you could switch to between 130 and 110.

There is also a took kit available, which you may need to buy if you want to work on the crank/BB yourself.

Any local dealer should have their 08 folder which contains all this info.

The SWorks cranks use a new bottom bracket standard (BB30?). This standard is used by Specialized on its SWorks road and CX bikes. Cannondale and maybe some other brands also use this standard on select high-end models.

The bottom bracket is oversized. If you decide to use conventional cranks (Dura Ace, FSA, etc.) you can get adapters from Specialized to use these cranks.

My SWorks Roubaix came with these cranks, and so far I haven't had any problems. I understand that there have been some changes for 2008 to improve durability. Although Specialized web site should show availability of 130 or 100, my Roubaix came with 110 with 34/50 chainrings. I'm pretty sure a 48 is available.

I dont think you can adapt these to work with a standard non-proprietary crankset(yet?). The tricross comes with the 110bcd spider and is swappable to 130bcd.

And they are reportedly lighter and stiffer than dura ace

If BB30 is based on the Cannondale SI BB used in the 07 System Six, then Cannondale sells a sleeve that can be press fit into the oversized BB in place of the SI bearings. The sleeve has standard BB threads.

Thanks for the reply guys, that has helped a lot. I am not a big fan of proprietary stuff, but as long as they are stiff and durable, I'll give it a shot.

I just heard from my rep., and he said the '08's won't be available till mid-October which seems kind of foolish to me. So, it looks like I will be riding an '07.

That is correct. You can't use the SWorks BB30 cranks on standard frames, but using an adapter, you can use standard cranks with the oversized bottom bracket of the SWorks frames.

Where can you get this adapter?

You should be able to order the adapter through any Specialized SWorks dealer. I would presume that Cannondale would offer it as well.
