View Full Version : The best looking bike
eugkim 09-14-2007, 01:35 PM Is it just me, or is the BMC Team Machine SLC01 Astana version the coolest bike around? I just bought a great bike - Cannondale Supersix Team Replica, which I love, but I keep thinking of buying this frame just to hang onto. Can't imagine the color scheme will be availabe much longer, given Astana's precarious state. The ride, of course, would be secondary. From the reviews I read, it probably wouldn't be too disappointed. All this being said, I couldn't be happier with my Supersix.
paredown 09-14-2007, 03:49 PM It's definitely got a certain je ne c'est quoi--oh I know, it's the boy-racer asthetic.:D
Actually, it is pretty cool!

It is definitely just you.

lemonlime 09-14-2007, 05:36 PM I really, really like that bike in the Swiss colors. The powder blue I'm not digging so much.
handsomerob 09-14-2007, 05:46 PM I am with TMB and LenJ on this one. That bike does nothing for me, at least built like that anyway.
It looks like a billboard that 3 guys put together without consideration of any semblance of a common theme.
Len J 09-14-2007, 05:49 PM I think it's great that not all bikes look the same.....that would be boring.
It's great having choices.
It's a great time to be a bike consumer.

JohnnyChance 09-14-2007, 05:53 PM i for one love the astana colors. and i love the way bmc's look. so yeah, it works for me.

That was officially the most PC version of "Dude, I hate your bike" EVER.

I think it isn't the frame colors as much as the Easton build. LenJ has a blue on his Kirk that is very similar and that bike is beautiful.
Easton makes good stuff, but a little more subtlety would go a long way on a bike that already has a lot going on. It would look 100x better on a unpainted carbon frame.
Here is my own example of a minimalist approach that works for me.
Dog Trainer 09-14-2007, 06:00 PM Got to wonder what the thought will be 15 to 20 yrs. from now. I doubt it will be considered a classic. Only time will tell.

Most of the bikes people consider classic these days don't move me one iota. I like snazzy paintjobs and materials and I find the look of the newer stuff with more seatpost showing than Merkx ever rode racier and more aggressive looking. Handsome Rob's bike is pretty nice with a cool back story, but I wouldn't want one for myself. I know he feels the same about my bikes. Vive la difference!
Sixty Fiver 09-14-2007, 06:12 PM Colnagos make me drool uncontrollably.

I agree: strip off the Easton stickers, and you would have a pretty nice looking BMC. Having said that, to be honest I think the fork on your minimalist bike clashes with the rest of it-- perhaps even as much as the Easton stickers do with the BMC. Maybe that was your point?
It would indeed be boring if everyone liked the same bike.
stunzeed 09-14-2007, 06:58 PM The BMC Pro machine is just a super nice frame no matter what color scheme...but the black and dark grey is my choice...I wish the BMCs fit me ..oh well
bbgobie 09-14-2007, 07:05 PM Pinerallo Prince...
Yumm!!!

Oops-way, wrong place.
terry b 09-14-2007, 07:39 PM I like this much of it, the rest I can live without.
Forrest Root 09-14-2007, 09:04 PM Well, it's certainly got that product labeling thing going on. Hell, you can almost see the paint.
Spear Legweak 09-15-2007, 12:54 AM A bit toned down http://www.bmc-racing.com/popup-view+M564f959b0e7.html but not much. Frame is cool and unique but more labels needs to come off. Some like the looks of a '66 Shelby Cobra or a '70 hemi Cuda while others fancy a McLaren formula 1 car in all its carbon and labels is a sweet looker. Beauty is in the eye.
Len J 09-15-2007, 02:55 AM That was officially the most PC version of "Dude, I hate your bike" EVER.
in fact I like the colors.
But the rest of the bike....the stickers, the "I Beam" construction, just doesn't do it for me. The whole look screams "look at me" which just isn't me.
I looked at the Eurobike pictures, and honestly maybe thought 1 or 2 bikes were good looking. Everything else looked like the bike equivilant of an escalade with spinners.
It's not PC BTW, I happen to believe what I wrote.

1speed_Mike 09-15-2007, 03:49 AM That BMC is nice, but, the Moots Compact SL does it for me (and, hopefully, will be the baseline for an upcoming build):

Taskmaxter 09-15-2007, 05:00 AM By far this is the best looking bike.....

+1.
foggypeake 09-16-2007, 07:01 AM By far this is the best looking bike.....
...and the BY FAR, the most functional.
atpjunkie 09-16-2007, 08:08 AM I like this much of it, the rest I can live without.
I like the color, I don't mind the frame design
I do mind the billboard
oh and I think compacts are ugly
I was riding my Motorola MXL yesterday and thinking, "what a fine lookin' lady"
then I thought of Len's Sachs
yup it is good to have variety for the variety of tatses

Its just you. It does nothing for me either.
514Climber 09-16-2007, 09:20 AM There was a guy who had one in a recent group ride - same powder blue color. He, however, had better aesthetic sense and went with Record, Reynolds wheels, and Deda stem/bars.
I would've preferred the frame in nude carbon.
Still, it looked very very nice indeed. Kinda like a bicycle equivalent of a Euro Victoria Secret model.
(In fact, I was so jealous, I made it a point to beat him on every town-line sprint. Okay - it was my weekly dose of schadenfreude and I wanted to add a BMC to my tick list.)
The point is, beauty is too subjective to call any one frame the "coolest." There's another thread regarding a Calfee. A lot of people seem to find it pleasing to the eye. I find the over all look amateurish and mediocre.
I'm currently toying with the idea of Kuota Kebel in all black or the Merlin Works. Others will say the frames do little or nothing for them, and it's certainly valid for them.
eugkim 09-16-2007, 10:05 AM When I posted this, I didn't have that particular bike shown in a subsequent follow-up in mind. I've always been a powder blue fan - have always loved the old San Diego Chargers' powder blue lightning uniforms, as well as UNC basketball. I also think that the frame is unique. Don't know how it rides. In all honesty, I might find myself tiring of the look - I've been in the same circumstance with a few dates in the past where, no matter how the look, I couldn't get out fast enough. Doubt I'll ever tire of looking at my Supersix.
master2129 09-16-2007, 10:21 AM I love the way this color scheme screams TETOSTERONE!

ethebull 09-16-2007, 10:42 AM The Moots would look better still with a curved rake fork - a symmetrical complement to the line of the seatpost.
SPINDAWG 09-17-2007, 02:55 PM because it is definately just you.

and I'd be one of those 66 Cobra. 70 Hemi Cuda (in Lime please) over Stickered F-1 any day.

Pina's would be quasi attractive if they didn't have those stupid, hallucinagenic forks and seatstays.
1speed_Mike 09-17-2007, 03:36 PM Pina's would be quasi attractive if they didn't have those stupid, hallucinagenic forks and seatstays.
Ya, those are really trippy! Do they have any functional reason for being like that? Or, is at all form?
messyparrot 09-17-2007, 03:37 PM No clue to be honest, the forks look kinda sexy to me with all those curves.:D
AndyP. 09-17-2007, 03:52 PM The most beautiful bike is still a red Columbus SLX De Rosa with Campy Super Record. Blue with yellow decals would do in a pinch!
beoba 09-20-2007, 09:32 PM Attached image: Similar color scheme, I like that it's consistent across the entire bike.
celeste55 10-17-2007, 09:49 AM i think the bike with astana paint is freaking awesome. i was actually thinking about buying that frame, just to have, like you. too bad im a broke highschooler. i think you should do it.
terzo rene 10-17-2007, 11:33 AM In keeping with the industrial design BMC should be unpainted or clearcoat only. Paint is so Baroque.
bbgobie 10-17-2007, 11:40 AM It looks like a cheap billboard to me, or a suitcase with travel stickers stuck on.
messyparrot 10-17-2007, 11:50 AM or a suitcase with travel stickers stuck on.
I love that rock and roll case look.:D
I guess it's this roadies wish to be the rockstar.
drainyoo 10-17-2007, 12:12 PM I love it.

Best looking bike on the market right now.
exracer 10-17-2007, 04:32 PM Ya, those are really trippy! Do they have any functional reason for being like that? Or, is at all form?
Back when they first came out with those forks and stays I thought I read somewhere that it was to help dampen out road vibrations. Something about not providing a straight path for vibrations to travel blah, blah, blah (marketing speak?). Too long ago to remember. I like them.

Yes, it certainly is...
locomotive1 10-17-2007, 06:40 PM It's Just You. The Wheels Look Great And So Do The Campy Components. That's A Great Frame But The Paint Is An Eyesore!
brentster 10-20-2007, 07:00 PM I'd have sex with the Pinarello. That seat tube is looking mighty nice. lol
Incredible looking work of art.
jhamlin38 10-21-2007, 10:26 AM I'd say the Merlin Agilis, or the one that has the carved lugs/tubes. Pictures don't do it justice.
I'm also a big fan of that moots. Tomasini with chromed lugs is also really sweet.
But the one that's best is the fondriest between my legs almost everday.
nbrigato 10-22-2007, 06:05 PM My vote for the best looking bike goes to the Wilier Cento (red, black and white). It looks great online and ever better in person - full Campy Record and Fulcrum Zeros!
brentster 10-22-2007, 08:41 PM That Cento does look pretty cool. Its very similar to the Tarmac until you go back past the seat tube.

Mr. Versatile 10-23-2007, 05:51 PM I don't like that Wilier at all. It's way too "busy" for me. I'm not crazy about red & black either. Just MHO.
ballmon 10-23-2007, 06:54 PM I love the way this color scheme screams TETOSTERONE!
NO, it's power blue. That's screaming estrogen you hear.
KINBOY 10-23-2007, 08:01 PM Argon-18
their entire line looks great!
