I've been reading this site for a few weeks and I'm amazed at the wealth of information and knowledge you guys have.
So my question is: I've got a loud clanking on my bike that I can't find the source. I've been riding less than a year on a full Dura Ace Carbon Felt I bought new and just noticed this today on a group ride. I've checked everything for tightness and can't find the source.
It seems to be coming from the rear hub area but the only thing that even moves are the cogs, they jiggle a little....is this normal?
What's the definition of a clincher and tubular tire/wheel?
What monthly magazine do most people prefer for the non-racer to read when internet reading just isn't doing it for ya. A little racer info would be interesting though.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A clanking like a metallic CLANK, like hitting a bucket with a spoon? Not a thud or a click or a tick-tick-tick? On a carbon bike? I can't even imagine what that could be. Could the rear derailleur be barely touching a spoke as the wheel goes around? Does it stop when you quit pedaling, or continue as long as the bike is moving? Does the speed or intensity vary with the bike speed or your pedaling cadence? All that could help with a diagnosis.
A clincher tire is one that mounts like a car tire, with an inner tube that holds the edges of the tire (called the bead) to the rim through air pressure. A tubular is shaped like a doughnut (no open side next to the wheel) and holds air by itself. It glues on to a different type of rim. Nothing about the two is interchangeable--to go from one to the other, you need new wheels and tires.
As for magazines, I dunno, Bicycling is all right for a beginner, but after about a year you'll notice that you're seeing the same stories ("Get in the best shape of your life in 16 minutes a day!") over and over.

it's more of a thud but not really metalic sounding. It doesn't go away when pedaling stops or change in cadence. If I can't find it I'll take it to my lbs, they'll probably point out something very obvious and I'll feel like an idiot. I've checked my cages, skewers and all other nuts and bolts........

Sounds like a loose cassette. That will cause a clunking noise like you described. The cogs shouldn't move at all.:frown2:

with a cassette whip and a special internal nut wrench, save some money and just get your LBS to do it.
