View Full Version : Key Bridge Sunrise=Boats and Bikes
Got up early to see what I could see.
This is what I saw.
The Key Bridge (for Francis Scott Key a former resident of Georgetown) crosses high above the C&O Canal and the Potomac from Georgetown to Virginia.
Great place to watch a sunrise.
MTNMAN 09-24-2007, 04:43 PM You're the photog extrordinaire. Thanks for the pics. Good to see so many active people out and about as well. That 1st shot brings back memories of when a nephew held his reception at the Car Barn. Is that still used?
Zoom, zoom, zip!
Folks were flying by.
The jets were coming in too.

Sure, still has the stupid trolly tracks in the parking and all.
It didn't take long for the sun to rise and it get to be time for me to head to work.
On my bike of course.
Ride your bike (or row your boat).

Howzitbroke 09-24-2007, 05:39 PM WOW! That is a lot of nice imagery to digest. Nice work. I think my favorite is the one man scull.
Cycler64 09-24-2007, 06:16 PM Awsome pictures!
nonsleepingjon 09-24-2007, 07:40 PM I like that last one of the boat - very nice shot and I like the swirls in the water from the oars.
rnhatch 09-25-2007, 04:47 AM Glad to see such an active Row to Work group up DC way. I know bridge traffic up there is brutal. Don't fight the traffic over the river, just row down the river! And another thing... do they do occasional breakfasts for the rowers like they do for the bikers? Might be the new thing...

They are rowing out of Thompson Boat house and are mostly Georgetown and GW teams. The broad yellow singles are beginners.
Chain 09-25-2007, 05:44 AM Helmets win 13 to 8 by my count.
Nice pics once again.
Helmets win 13 to 8 by my count.....
That is only because you didn't count the rowers, the runners and the puppy!

When runners and puppies need helmets, it's time to move out to the country! The rowers are probably safe, but I've known a few folks on sailboats that needed helmets. Jibe what?
Ridgetop 09-25-2007, 04:18 PM I love the lense choice. Life streaking by on two wheels, two feet, or a whole lot of oars. Awesome.
GirchyGirchy 09-25-2007, 05:20 PM Very cool. Thanks for uploading!
oarsman 09-27-2007, 08:26 AM Now, I have to love that. Photos of rowers at sunrise on a bike site! Looks like a mighty fine place to row (love the one of the pair especially - my favourite boat, and also the most challenging to row well)

It took MissM and I quite a while to get comfortable in a double, I can't imagine how hard a pair must be (I would always be afraid of running into one of the bridges  ). Of course we aren't full time rowers but it is a nice change of pace and darn beautiful near sunrise or sunset.
Looks pretty from high above but sometimes the water is just disgusting......

Well, I suppose it could be worse. We share our rowing course with seaplanes, and they land just outside of the course then taxi across it. Guest rowers are always a little concerned. And don't get me started on the harbour (aka booze) cruises, or all the pleasure boats...or the people in the restaurants and on the sea wall who just can't seem to help yelling out "stroke"
Don't think a mixed pair is a very good idea. My pairs partner and I are very close to the same size and strength - anything else is a disaster waiting to happen.

The DC Potomac rowing scene is pretty good. It gets a little crowded with all the sculls out what with all the college teams and all there can be a good wait for dock space but powerboats are only a problem on holidays and weekends (and there is an enforced 5 knot speed limit for them).
If you go too far south on the river it can get a little crazy with boaters or worse the jet skis in the afternoon but it is a good place to row.
Now if the water was only clean....:(
Brick Tamland 09-27-2007, 01:50 PM This one is my favorite. Great photos!
