Hard to believe this is true, but if so, who are these idiots?

Sounds like they don't want past or present dopers representing the sport. Since Eddie had a positive test during his career, he gets lumped into the group of dopers. That's life....:cryin:

But I do like Eddy's response.

Idiocracy. Could you imagine the NBA not inviting Jordan to an All-Star Game due to gambling issues?

...Eddy: ............................................

Or like keeping Pete Rose out of the Baseball Hall of Fame for gambling issues....

Please. Eddy's no Pete Rose.

Pretty similar overall....likely the best hitter ever in baseball, but not in the hall of fame.

What is clear though is Eddy was a doper in a sport that is desperately trying to separate its' self from doping/dopers......Enough said!

BTW.....The "Quote" button at the bottom of a post is your friend :D makes it easier for the person your replying to to figure out you are actually replying to them.

I think it's bad policy for the sport to castrate itself from its past and great figures. If Eddy doped, which he probably didi, he likely did no more than other riders of the era. Rose is distinct in that most ballplaers didn't gamble on baseball games they were involved in.

By the way, I frequently use the qoute function. As there are hadly any posts here and no interveneing posts, I thought you could figure it out. I was right.

Pablo...There is no "IF" with Eddy and doping...He was caught using amphetamines and was kicked out of the Giro for doping. If you are going to say something like

Idiocracy. Could you imagine the NBA not inviting Jordan to an All-Star Game due to gambling issues?

You should at least know the history of the sport. I would think you could figure it out....I guess I was wrong.

Pete Rose, just has the distinction of being caught. Who's to say others were not gambeling on the games? Refs have been caught fixing games for point spreads, players have been found doing the same thing. The same could be said for Eddy....Many other riders were doping (if not all), he just got caught.

So yes, it's pretty similar to say: like keeping Pete Rose out of the Baseball Hall of Fame for gambling issues....

As far as the quote issue, it just makes it much easier to track a thread for those that are just reading it. I guess what you are saying is you just like to make things difficult for people

Yeah jeeze Pablo you need to use quotes because otherwise all of us would be so confused especially since he is talking about pete rose right after you did.

This is silly - Pete Rose being compared to Eddy Mercx and a cycling event being compared to induction into a hall of fame

Not a good analogy at all. Nothing to see here, move along please...

So what did Jordan have to do with this topic? I didn't bring up athletes from other sports Pablo did...His was a stupid analagy, so I brought up one from another sport that was similar to his.

Again...This is the point with Eddie and the OP's topic:

Yes, others have likely gambled. However, I assert that the situation is different than doping in cycling becasue it is widely claimed that everyone at that level in cycling and in that era doped. I don't think the same could be said for gambling in sports.

As I said before, I think it's bad policy. Moreover, I agree with your statement that this is an example of cycling trying to distance itself form any and all dopers. I just think it's foolish and futile.
