I hope Hoo deletes it just so no unfortunate souls come across it later and read it. Bocephus Jones II 09-26-2007, 03:23 PM Jesus, that thread sucked anyways. I hope Hoo deletes it just so no unfortunate souls come across it later and read it. Hell you were close to getting lucky...what are you complaining about? :D Len J 09-26-2007, 03:24 PM Why did it suck? I had just finished a magnificent response laced with wit, and insight....when I went to post it "Thread closed!"...........suckors. :mad2:  :cryin: (Bikeboy was about to be Powned! :p ) Len Bocephus Jones II 09-26-2007, 03:25 PM Why did it suck? Did some reading, some thinking. Sorry len, I know your post is a lost treasure. :( Len J 09-26-2007, 03:34 PM Sorry len, I know your post is a lost treasure. :( I'll grieve later. :D Len BTW......I never heard the "inappropriate" term that was used before. Infact the first time I read it I went right by it. Is it really that offensive? SilasCL 09-26-2007, 03:37 PM I hope I don't get sucked back in... Here's why the thread sucked, IMO: 1. People will always make assumptions of others based on their appearance. To assume otherwise, or to try and change it, is hopelessly naive (sorry Bikeboy) 2. Those assumptions will often fail to be correct. When you stereotype people you're lumping them in a group and assuming other traits about them. Maybe you're right half the time, but you're still wrong the other half. (sorry Len and Bill) 3. The hypothetical of 2 equal candidates for a job is a strawman argument. (Len, you know this is phony baloney, right?) 4. Lastly, if you want to work for the man, know what the frickin dress code is and dot your i's and cross your t's. To do otherwise means you're arrogant at the least. (Sorry paint) 5. Life isn't fair, my mom just missed out on a job she wanted, because the person she'd be working for didn't want a woman for the position. That sucks, but what else is new? dr hoo 09-26-2007, 03:41 PM I'll grieve later. :D Len BTW......I never heard the "inappropriate" term that was used before. Infact the first time I read it I went right by it. Is it really that offensive? Lots of people think so, and react to it that way. Lots of other people think it is a pop cultural term and is not offensive. If you pull it apart and say both words in full, I think the power and background meaning of the term becomes a lot clearer. Len J 09-26-2007, 03:44 PM 3. The hypothetical of 2 equal candidates for a job is a strawman argument. (Len, you know this is phony baloney, right?) I see it all the time. 2 or more candidates, prescreened by a retained headhunter, relativly similar experience. highly intelligent, highly capable, you could flip a con on capabilities........so the "tiebreaker" is alwyas fit, both up & down the organization......fit with the culture. If you think that is a strawman, then you haven't done high level hiring. Len dr hoo 09-26-2007, 03:53 PM If you think that is a strawman, then you haven't done high level hiring. Len Very true. I've faced that time and time again. It comes down to two, and a strong case can be made for both. There are always differences, but even the differences often balance out. The one has some of this, but the other has some of the other. Val_Garou 09-26-2007, 03:55 PM Very true. I've faced that time and time again. On hiring committees, or in another context? Admissions maybe? Just curious. undies 09-26-2007, 04:00 PM Dang, I leave here for a couple of hours to get some actual work done and things get exciting. Figures. Story of my life. dr hoo 09-26-2007, 04:03 PM On hiring committees, or in another context? Admissions maybe? Just curious. Hiring committees, grad admission committees (while in grad school, as a non-voting member). At the top, everyone is good. Just different. |
