Hello all I just had a question. I am a true beginner (started last week) that is in need of a pair of shoes. I found a good deal on speedplay light action pedals so I need something compatible with those. So I guess the question is what shoe would be best, I do have very wide feet. Also I have heard that you should should get a shoe that is a little bigger than normal because your feet can swell during rides. thanks in advance.

In general, shoes come in two types: road shoes and mountain bike shoes. Mountain bike shoes have extra bits of rubber on the bottom so you can walk more easily in them, they sometimes but not always have more flexible soles, they are usually a bit heavier (because of the extra rubber), but they typically cannot accept road cleats.

If you look at the bottom of a cycling shoe, you will see either three mounting holes (in a triangle shape), or two mounting holes in a line parallel with the sole. Some shoes will have both (i.e., five mounting holes).

If you look at cleats, you will find the same arrangement of mounting holes. Road cleats typically have three mounting holes, and mountain cleats typically have two. Just make sure you buy shoes and cleats that have the same number of holes. And of course, buy cleats that match your pedals. One set of cleats comes with a new set of pedals.

I also have wide feet. My 1st choice are Shimano 151Ws. I had a pair of Sidi Geniuses recently, but didn't like either the fit or the quality as well as the Shimanos.
