My only road bike is a Klein Q Carbon race that I got about 4 years ago. I commute on this bike, 11 miles each way, along with occasional longer rides when I get a chance to get away from the wife and kids. I've been riding the stock saddle the whole time. Until this year, it's been fine. But a number of months ago, I started having issues with it. I've been getting slightly chaffed on the left side, and I seem to be unable to stay back far enough on it. I keep finding myself up on the narrow part of the saddle, and it's pretty uncomfortable. I swaped out my 120mm stem for a 90mm, and brought the nose of the saddle up a little bit, as well as moved it forward. I did all these things at different times. Neither of them has helped much, but I'm still riding it that way.

I did a century this past weekend, and it was pretty much torture, although I wore some newer shorts that fit tighter, and didn't have chaffing issues.

It almost seems like the saddle is too round and narrow, and the roundness makes me slide forward. I don't want to turn the nose up any more, because it hurts the parts (I tried, and it's not pleasant).

So I'm thinking a wider, flatter saddle. Does this sound right? I'm not getting any pain in my knees or legs as I've changed positions, nor do I see any improvement or degredation in performance, and I feel like I'm in a comfortable position with my arms, although my arms (triceps) will get tired on longer rides, because I'm trying to hold myself from sliding forward.

If I need a new saddle, any recommendations on something that's considered to be wide and flat? I don't like the idea of too much padding, as I think that may add to the friction/rubbing, of the crotch area.

I do have a local Performance, which has a great return policy, so I'm thinking I could get a saddle, commute on it for a couple of days, and if I don't like it, return it and swap it for a different one to try out. I just don't know where to start looking.

From your descripton, I wonder if you're having bike fit problems? Saddle choice is so individual & personal that it's hard to recommend anything specific. I will say this:

Very generally speaking there are only 2 types of saddles...flat and dished or concave. Flat saddles are usually preferred by riders who move around on the bike. Concave saddles are usually used by riders who prefer to stay in one position & pedal. I'm MUCH happier with a concave saddle that's lightly padded. Please remember...that's just me. YMMV.

I'm also assuming that you're wearing decent quality cycling shorts without underwear and with a good chamois. Although some riders don't like or use it, I always "lube up" before riding any significant distance. Anything you prefer will probably work. Some of the more popular ones are Chamois Butter, Noxema, Vaseline, and various other skin creams. Some of these are cycling specific. Some aren't. IME, it doesn't matter.

Hope this helps a little.
