View Full Version : What's the difference....?
gebbyfish 07-26-2004, 04:24 AM ......between Ekimov blowing snot rockets at or on Simeoni and German fans spittting at or on Armstrong during the Alp de Huez time trial? If you're aghast at one, I don't think that you can support the other. For pete's sake, I think the problems on Alp de Huez made the front page of the New York Post. If not the front page they were certainly featured prominently. I think there is a little shine taken off of Armstrong's star with his and his team's behavior.

Whatever you think of Ekimov, he's a professional cyclist, riding in the race. That makes him a lot different than the random drunk fans on the side of the road. Trying to equate the two totally different worlds is absurd.
carlos 07-26-2004, 06:30 AM the difference is that eki is a professional athlete. hes supposed to act like one.
i love armstrong, but only when he is riding his bike, but when he is off the bike and with a microfone and cameras around..... what he needs to understand is that his natural talent is to be a bike racer, not a spokesman. as long as he keep his BIG mouth shut, everything will be allright.

I think if you are a professional, you should act like one. Using your logic, one could forgive the drunken fans, because they are drunk. I just think that taking the high road, and not doing things like they did to Simeoni would make them look better, not worse, but I guess that doesn't matter to them. I think even those who like Lance Armstrong and postal, probably find that harder to do the past few days. But again, that probably doesn't matter to them.

Using my logic, I would say that whatever drunks do to other drunks is okay, in a general sense, as long as no one gets hurt. They are in the fraternity of drunks. If they want to puke on each other, or tatoo roses on their butts, that's fine with me.
Pro cyclists have their own fraternity, with their own rules, traditions, and customs. They also have their own punishments when someone strays. What Eki did was one harmless way to punish another rider for doing something stupid that made everyone else work harder. That's how pro bike riders show their disgust to another rider. It sure beats knocking him off his bike.
The truth is, I didn't see anything come out. Eki looked to be pretending to blow a snot rocket to me, and he was totally overacting, because he knew the camera was there and he wanted to make a point.
bimini 07-26-2004, 07:45 AM on his first shot, where as the drunk Germans were just plain stupid lucky to finally hit thier mark.
That's the difference between a pro cyclist and a drunk German. It comes from years of training. Yes, any one of the USPS team members can hit thier mark at 30 paces with a snot rocket or even a lugey.
I'm certain this is part of the Carmichael training regime. The team spends months in the upper mountains perfecting the art of shooting the perfect snot rocket.
I'm just surprised Ekimov did not pull out the secret weapon and wiz on Simeioni. I guess USPS was far enough up on Domina that there was no need to pull out the Big One!

Lifelover 07-26-2004, 08:26 AM The difference is that Simeoni knows where to find Ekimov if he wants to take it up afterwards. This is not the case with a drunken cowardly fan.
