no two coaches agree on the whole interval thing, other than the fact that if you want to go fast you will need a lot of that kind of pain. Better to get at least three or so training books.

+1 on Arnie Baker's HIT book. It not only gives you the whole theory behind (in support of) intervals and intensity work but gives you a specific 13-week progressive program. I used it last winter starting around Feb 1 and it was the best training I've ever done.
