I was just about to crank in my Record UT Bottom Bracket when I noticed it has orange-colored compound -- pre-applied at the factory -- in threads of the BB Cups.

Anyone have any idea what that may be?

Campy has always put some sort of thread locker on the BB cup threads. It used to be blue. I'd still grease the threads. You don't want a corroded cup stuck in the frame.

Thanks C-40, ... I was in the middle of setting things up then...

I guess if they applied it at the factory they must know what they are doing, I was kinda surprised at the color of the stuff. I figured they'd use blue or purple.

For sure, I'll be greasing it, too.

threadlocker and grease (or any other contaminant for that matter) are incompatible. ;)
Put it this way, the grease wins :D
oh, and colour means nothing. Depends on brand and market.

There was a recent thread on Loctite 222. Check it out.

The product applied by Campy in the past (square taper BB cups) has always been a couple of small dots of a plastic substance, not a liquid like loctite 222 that fills all gaps and between the parts and hardens. The two products are totally different.

If the orange stuff is applied all over the threads, the OP better read the instructions to see if this is a change noted in the instructions.

Reading the current instructions on the Campy website, it appears that Campy recommends using loctite 222 if at all possible. If 222 is used, then of course grease would render it worthless. All surfaces should be clean and dry before using 222.

It will be interesting to see how many people have problems removing the cups after applying the 222.

Yup that was my post.

I got sick of going to everyhardware store in the nearest several towns, only to strike out every time on this obscure super-low-strength (222/purple) formulation.

I kinda don't want to start an account at yet another online store for a $5 bottle.

So I'm going with Campy's "standard" method (with a Park Torque wrench and Park BBT-19 External 16-notch BB Tool to 35 Nm). On the instruction sheet that came with my crankset & cups, the "standard" was at the time the "preferred," they have since flip-flopped them.

how about just a small dab of anti-seize compound instead of the grease. I have a Veloce BB that i need to mount in my frame. I dont want the thing stuck...but on the same account...i dont want it comming loose riding either and strip the bb out.

No problems at all when it comes time to remove the cups. They come out quite easy with just the standard shimano BB cup tool. Wrap a plastic bag around the BB cup before putting the tool on to get a better bite & not mar the finish on the cups.
