I know we've talked about this before. http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=96138&highlight=Cunego+happened
Nevertheless, what do you all make of Cunego's win? Is this the old (young) Cunego from 2004 or was the field diminished?

The field was full of people that wanted to win this race, esp Frank Schleck and Ricco (il cobra) The Kid was strong and he sacrificed his own chances for Bettini in the worlds so he had super form for the autumn classics.

I don't think he's been too far away. I had him has a darkhorse for worlds. He's been near the front all year.

I am a huge fan of The Kid. Obviously he was awesome in 2004 -- 22 victories or so -- but his critics forget that in 2004 the Giro was not as competitive as the ProTour versions of the Giro from 2005-2007, and excluding Lombardia in 2004 his other 2004 victories were virtually all in Italian races. 2005 was a tough year for him with mono, although he did squeeze out a Romandy stage win and the Japan Cup at year-end. 2006 was a better year in that he got some early season wins, podiumed at L-B-L and, if you scratched the doped up Basso and Buffalo in the 2006 Giro, he would have been the Giro GC runner-up to Gibo. Then the white jersey at the TdF in 2006. And 2007 was another good campaign for him, sixth in the final ProTour individual standings and capping it with his second Monument win at age 26. Not bad.
Hopefully next year he focuses on the hilled Classics (LBL, Fleche, Amstel) and on TdF stage wins.

Cuenego is seriously a special rider. If he can land a spring classic, he'll certainly contend for one of the GT's, and depending on the location, try for worlds and olympics in 08.
Next year I'd put all my chips in cunego, especially if he has a decent spring.
I'm not certain that he's the type of rider to go toe2toe with a Ballan or Boonen in the spring, but the real benefits for him are GT's, and later in the year.
He looked really good at GdL.
