View Full Version : Has anyone tried this product?
MR_GRUMPY 10-26-2007, 11:52 AM I would rather not try this product and feel like an idiot when it fails.
If it works, it would save a lot of pin holes.

B-Fun 10-26-2007, 12:57 PM Never used that before, but some of the guys I raced with last year used a spray adhesive that they got at a hardware store I think. You just spray it on to the back of the numbers, pick it up at the very edges of the corners, and press it on to the jersey. Worked like a charm, no flap, and all the adhesive came off with the number. If you'd like I can try and find out what it was that they used, probably a lot cheaper than the 14 bucks for the tape. Let me know.

Please find out the name of the adhesive. Thanks
wasfast 10-26-2007, 02:15 PM I don't know the exact adhesive but likely it's one of the 3M Super 77 type adhesives. They also make the Super 80 and Super 90 which are higher strength, contact adhesives. You can buy them at Home Depot for example.

Yeah, grump, 3M Super 77 works like a champ. It takes a bit of experience to figure out how much to use (hint, not very much and let it dry for a while first), but I use it exclusively. I got mine at WalMart. I think I spent around $10 for the can, which seems roughly like a lifetime supply. We have a weekly series where we have to reuse the same number and it'll re-tack with a just a little more spray.
If you use too much it will leave a glue stain. There's apparently some goo-off kind of stuff that you can wash your jersey in, but I haven't tried that yet (I did get overzealous the first couple of times).
Especially when you wear a skin suit, it's awesome. The number will be 100% FLAT on your kit... no more flapping parachute number.

There are a number of products, like SUPER-GRIP that come in a spray and are to prevent your throw rugs from slipping on the bathroom floor. I would bet that a liberal spray on the back of a Tyvek number would make it stick really well, but still be removable. It's an easy experiment to run - just cut up a Priority Mail or FedEx envelope and get some spray from your local hardware store or WalMart, then go for a ride. I've heard of people doing this with good results, but I've not done it myself.
MR_GRUMPY 10-26-2007, 05:21 PM I've tried spray on stuff from an art store, but it left residue on the jersey that took five washes to get out.
Argentius 10-26-2007, 05:40 PM Hrm.
"Caution, adhesion on skinsuits has varied, use with caution."
I'll have to try the 77 stuff, though. One thing I've found coming up through the ranks is that cat 1/2 riders are better at handling their bikes, but not really any better at getting their numbers pinned on...

But does it come off when you don't want it to? It would suck to lose your race number mid race. Would it hold up in a crash? Not that I anticipate crashing a lot... but if I get back on my bike to finish the dayum race I want credit for finishing! And what about rain?

Like I said you need to experiment. I'd also posit "who cares?" for skinsuits.... I only put mine on to race, so there's a number over that residue part the whole time anyway. This thread (http://biketechreview.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1568&highlight=residue) has some thoughts

Not for me, but you can always throw a pin or two on for insurance.

I've never lost a number in a crash whether pinned or glued so I don't know. I'd think if I crashed hard enough to rip the number from my side I'd be pretty jacked. I did crash out on the number side in June going through a corner at 30 mph (about 5 minutes after my avatar photo was taken) and the number stayed put.
And what about rain?
THAT is a great question. I don't know... I live in the desert. If it's going to rain, I'm not racing.

Weeell, I race cross where avoiding crashes and rain isn't always an option!
I'll have to give it a shot during a rainy race and throw a pin in the middle just in case.
Edit: No rain tomorrow, but I'll be giving it a shot on my skinsuit for my race. I just bought myself a can of 3M 77 spray adhesive at Home Depot for $9.99. It was in the tape aisle with the other 3M products (like painter's tape).
MR_GRUMPY 10-27-2007, 06:31 PM Maybe I'll just stick with pins (pun intended)......(Six pin user).....I always carry extra pins, so that I only grab four from the registration table.
I can pin a number on a jersey while it's on the hood of my car, pretty good. It's just that a skinsuit is so stretchy, it always ends up looking like crap, and I have to go around trying to find a teammate and say "Pin me, mister".

a little goes a long way...

Worked out really well... I'm sold! I used it on two other people first for practice. Used a little bit too much the first time by triple spraying one area. Double seems okay if you're far enough away, but triple was a bit TOO much. I was also easily able to stick it on myself after putting my skinsuit on. Noice! :D
No reside (except on the skinsuit where I triple sprayed, and then only a sliver), which probably would come out if it was pretreated with laundry detergent. It was nice not to have to take pins from the reg table, especially because they didn't have many left!
iliveonnitro 10-28-2007, 08:03 PM I bought my spray adhesive from walmart. Spray the number and the jersey and it works like a charm. No more flapping, either.
