View Full Version : New 585
jerman 10-28-2007, 06:49 PM Look sold me an '07 585 at a discounted price after my '05 555 developed a paint crack at a TT lug. Took it out a couple of times this weekend and was totally impressed with the smoothness and responsiveness, especially when accelerating. Totally efficient, what a great bike! Build-up is:
DA10 components
Easton EC-70 bars
FSA K-Force stem
Ergopost 4 seatpost
Aliante saddle
Ligero hanbuilts:
WI hubs
Cx-rays 20/24
Niobium30 rims
Maxxis Hors Categorie tires
The bike's ride is so smooth, indescribable, and the fit is perfect. The new wheels are light and awesome, and the Maxxis tires go on like butter -- thanks for the suggestion Alienator. I needed something after breaking a tire tool trying to get Cont 4K's on.
This is a really nice looking bike, it's too bad I can't do better with the pictures.

Thanks. Look still has some 585's in blue and white from '07 (not a color I saw offered for the 595's), but I don't believe they kept blue and white for '08.
I thought strongly about the 595, and could have ordered one as this was my 50th birthday present. But I saw a post on RBR about a problem getting the saddle straight with the integrated post; then a mechanic at my LBS said he worked on an integrated seatpost (another brand of bike) that he was not able to get the saddle straight on. Being an old guy, really wanting a blue and white bike, and not wanting the worry of someone stealing the hot looking 595, I ordered the more traditional looking 585. My 585 frameset came with the Ergopost.
The ride is magical. I started on an '85 steel, then had an '03 Trek 2300, all aluminum, then got the Look 555 in '05. The Trek was great until I got the 555, it was so smooth and much more stiff. However, as good as the 555 is and was this 585 is that much better. It is just so comfortable, there really was a noticable difference on the two rides I did this weekend. And I just cannot challange the bike with transfer of power, every time I give more energy the bike efficiently transfers it to the road. It is very quiet and solid and handles beautifully -- the comfort and ride really surprises me.
So, not too fast but hanging on the back in style.

Forrest Root 10-28-2007, 08:22 PM Very nice. A lot of people don't know that after creating the Heavens and the Earth and then lipstick lesbians, the Gods created Look bicycles.
That's a verifiable fact.

You made a nice choice. I rode a 595 for a bit and the ride was very nice. Very nice. If the 585 is anything like that--which they say it is--then surey you won't be disappointed.
The folks at Look certainly have style and taste down to an art, and bicycle design and function down to a science.
SuperSlow 10-29-2007, 05:40 AM Very nice, I just got mine as well. It is amazing
joehartley 10-29-2007, 01:06 PM Very hot.

It's pretty much science.
onrhodes 10-30-2007, 05:00 AM How does it compare to the 555? I have the 555 and like it a lot, but I was just interested in what you see as the differences? advantages, disadvantages?
Thanks!
uzziefly 10-30-2007, 06:20 AM Nice bike. Definitely a brand I would like to try or get should I have the cash.
By the way, I think white tape or black tape might be better. No? Just my thoughts though.
How much of a discount did they give you anyway?
manhattanproj 11-01-2007, 08:28 PM don't exactly like the color and the silver bar tape. the aesthetics need a bit work.
but it is a LOOK, so nice bike.
mavicwheels 11-01-2007, 08:48 PM I had the look 565 for about 2 weeks and found it not to my liking. The bottom bracket had way too much flex and the ride was was more like the trek "wooden spoon feeling".:(
jerman 11-02-2007, 03:16 PM The tape was on the bars from my old 555, which went much better as it had more silver in it. The mechanic at the LBS put the silver on without asking me, but it did go better with my old bike. I will be switching to black but just wanted to take it and get it out on the road and ride. I snapped a few picks while it was still shiney.
You can't really see the blue from the pictures, it's really a brilliant, metallic blue. It's a nice color if you like blue.
The '05 555 had a great road feel. It was stiff and transferred power well and gave a really nice ride. However, the new 585 has shown to be plenty stiff in the bottom bracket but has a much more mellow ride on the road. It feels more comfortable than the old 555. The fit is a little better for me on the new 585. The best way to describe it is when I get on it, it feels like home -- familiar. However, that said the '05 555, which I think was replaced by the 565, was a great bike and both of those Looks are a lot better than my Trek 2300 alu. The 585 is just so smooth.
It was an '07 so Look discounted over 50%, still had to shell out -- didn't want to -- but now I believe it was worth it.
nrspeed 11-15-2007, 07:02 AM Nice ride! What does it weigh?

Beauty! Great looking wheelset.
azdroptop 11-15-2007, 10:51 AM I'm looking hard at the 585 ultra. Nice ride.
SuperSlow 11-15-2007, 04:27 PM go for it, I am an amazed new 585 ultra owner

Do you know if they ultra comes in the very sweet white paint? I love the white.
No, it only come in black. I just bought one too, haven't built it up yet.
Len J 11-18-2007, 07:01 PM and I'm stoked you love the ride.
Aesteticially, there are 2 things that I would change that would take this 9.7 out of 10, to a 10 out of 10. (In other words they are nits):
1.) Bar tape. I think a White would be awesome.......that silver, as you noted, just doesn't work.
2.) That post doesn't work for me at all. The shape is clunky. It draws the wyw away from what is a very lovely frame. It should complement the frame not draw the eye away. YMMV,
As I say these are nits. the bike is lovely. I had not seen the blue & white...I really like it.
What size is it? How tall are you? What is your PBH (Pubic Bone Height from the floor)? What length stem is on that bike?
Happy riding....enjoy the hell out of that beauty.
Len
cpark 11-18-2007, 07:21 PM Nice.....
How much does it weigh?
Unlikely others, I think the silver handlebar tape looks nice but it might look nicer with the blue Fizix tape (if it matches)
azdroptop 11-18-2007, 07:39 PM Thanks. I think I could live with black.:D
jerman 11-19-2007, 03:40 PM Thanks for the good words. And master2129 is right! I am more impressed with these wheels everytime I ride them, especially after spending some time switched out to my Bonti's. These are light and rock solid. I know I "feel" faster.
So Len, white tape? I've been hesitant, how does that stand up to dirt and grime, does it clean up OK? I've never had it. What about a black Thompson Masterpiece post, would that look nicer? The Ergopost came with this frame fork but I have another saddle mounted on it and will be switching between the two for "health" reasons...
but this leads to the VERY BEST money I have ever spent in cycling, EVER!
~$110 for a Serrotta-type fit kit.
I went in to the best fit kit person I could find in the area and now feel so great on this bike. I am just over 5'10", with a long torso, shorter legs -- jeans inseam ~30 to 31" (sorry, I don't know my PBH.) The guy spent 2 1/2 hours with me. My saddle was too low, causing shearing forces knee pain, that's fixed and now so with the proper fit I feel like I am getting more power. I cannot recommended it enough.
The stem is 100mm but the fit kit guy said I am near needing to go to a 90 with my flexibility so this has motivated me to resume daily stretching and begin trying to locate a yoga class.
The bike rides very nice but does have quicker steering than my old '05 555 or '03 Trek 2300. And I haven't been on a good scale but it comes in right around 15 1/2 pounds. So, bottom line -- I've got to switch that bar tape!

White tape does clean OK if you get the right type......it's also easy to replace.
As to the post......The Thompson will either be a non-setback which could screw up your position, or that (to me) Ugly bent one....YMMV.
If you like the look of what you have, that's all that matters........Beut there are some classic black setback seatposts out there if you look around......
Awsome bike.

uzziefly 11-19-2007, 11:28 PM I think Fizik has good tape that's easy to clean. Try Bontrager and Deda as well. Easy to clean and they offer the gel tapes if you like those too.
jerman 11-26-2007, 09:42 AM The size is a medium, I forgot to mention that earlier. It has a 54.5cm top tube. I called Allen Richardson with Look in Califormia and he had helpful information about sizing.
I have that zero setback Thompson Masterpiece and it was also fitted with another saddle in the fit kit. All I have to do is switch them out.
