I am thinking of switching from my Polar 720i to a Garmin 305. How does the computer respond when set up in a trainer? I know I won't be going anywhere but does the cadence sensor work fine and how about the HR software and is there any zone set up you can do on this computer? Also will the speed sensor be on the back wheel so I might be able to determine my speed when hooked into the trainer?

Thanks for the help!

Responds fine on the trainer. The cadence and speed sensor is mounted on the rear chainstay. By default the 305 calculates speed by GPS, but you can turn GPS off and it will calculate speed with the rear wheel sensor. You can set hr, speed, and ,if I remember correctly, cadence zones.

Works fine, I have the 305 on my trainer w/ cad, HR and speed right now.

Works like previously mentioned -- HR, speed, distance, cadence, and zones...

Only thing to note is that every trainer is different and "trainer miles" are not the same as road miles. My previous Nashbar trainer had me going 20-25mph (depending on resistance setting) at the same intensity that my Kurt Kinetic has me at 18.5mph. It adds up after 8-10hrs/wk.

Yeah I would just like something to gage with and speed is a good way for me to do that on my excersize. I don't really care if its not real world speed miles just something I can look at. Does the system have a back light so you can view the data if you are out riding at night?

I used a Forerunner 305 last year on a trainer and it worked great... you can also program in your own workout by either HR or speed, it is actually pretty easy. Last year I just did it by HR, but I may try to speed this winter. Pretty cool.
