View Full Version : The Diesel Huff
Slim Again, Soon 11-01-2007, 07:12 AM Here's the latest in auto-expression -- The Diesel Huff.
I've noticed lately that a lot of diesel pickup drivers like to stomp on it when they pass a cyclists to give their friends and neighbors a belch of pollution out the tailpipe.
Fortunately, this really doesn't do what they think it does -- you're moving too fast to be an easy target, and even if their aim is good or they get lucky, you're past the black cloud in an instant.
But it is funny to watch, and it does make you wonder about the guys behind the wheel.
Truck Bubbas -- grow up. :p
JohnnyChance 11-01-2007, 09:40 AM it does work pretty well if you are say, stopped on the side of the road talking on your phone, like I was last week.
TeamStaton 11-01-2007, 10:06 AM As a cyclist that also drives a Diesel truck I will say that it is fun to lay out a huge black cloud of smoke from time to time. However, I do everything in my power to avoid this when passing a fellow cyclist on the road. It is completely frustrating to have someone pour on the soot while you're sucking every breathe like it's your last while riding.

no doubt!! Gotta be right up there with teasing kittens with a piece of string or a new rollercoaster! F-U-N!!!
//victim of the "punch-it pass" here too.
Doggity 11-01-2007, 01:26 PM Yah, I get this, along with cretins that like to honk or yell out the window right as they go by. What some cagers think is entertainment....
GirchyGirchy 11-01-2007, 03:36 PM I work for a diesel manufacturer at a plant that builds a lot of those engines. It shames me. :(
Yeah.....that is pretty annoying, but not nearly as bad as when the pickup is running biodiesel.
For whatever reason, the smell of biodiesel fumes is as noxious as regular diesel but seems to hang in the air far longer.
Nothing like the smell of burnt french fries. SUPER SIZE ME.....NOT!!!
My Own Private Idaho 11-02-2007, 07:27 AM I got that recently on a long climb. The truck driver was, I think, trying to express displeasure at being held up. Funny thing was, I was on the shoulder, and he had about 6 cars on his bumper because he was going so slow. He was inconveniencing more people than I was.
It does hang around on a climb.
Fredrico 11-02-2007, 08:28 AM And here I always thought those clouds of deisel fuel were from accelerating in a low gear! I mean, when the big truck has to slow to 10 mph behind you snailing up a climb, he's gotta go into first or second, especially if he's got a load. And then when it's safe to pass, he's going to wind out a few gears getting up to speed, especially going up a grade.
Ain't that right most of the time? Shoot. Whattaya want?

It's not the big trucks. It's the hopped up diesel 3/4ton pick-ups. Me thinks compensation for lack of manhood. :cryin:

This was a pickup. I was on the shoulder. I didn't slow him down, he purposely slowed down, did not shift gears, and floored the accelerator to produce the biggest black cloud he could. He did this because I was there on a bike, and for no other reason. M'kay?

You gotta watch the guy who spends all his money on a big dooley with chrome running boards and can't afford a haircut! He'll get uptight with some stud in lycra whacking his classy race bike up a hill, because he probably hasn't been laid in years, or his wife's so fat, he can't find her...uhh, never mind.
godot 11-02-2007, 12:20 PM a good crop dusting on a regular basis will keep your skin bug free thru the riding season. those guys in the trucks are actually doing you a favor. you could wave (with more than one finger, please) to thank them, but they probably can't see you anyway.

I dunno. Knowing those people, they do it all the time just for fun.
markie 11-03-2007, 09:32 AM Yeah, this happened to me about a month ago. On my regular commute road, where I normally see a car about once a week. So I cruise along feeling pretty safe and oblivous to what might happen next.
All of a sudden there is a giant red diesel pick up about six inches from me accelerating as hard as possible.
Great! F#@$@$! A-holes! I flip the finger and then give chase and the truck slows down. I had not really thought about that option. Two big hicks in a truck vs one dude in lycra..... I get within 20 feet and they drive-off. I guess they must have been scared of my skinny ass.
I wouldn't have really minded if they had not crept up, coasting behind me, and then buzzed me so close.
DrRoebuck 11-03-2007, 01:49 PM A lot of cars/trucks do that when they pass. I don't give them enough credit to think they're intentionally trying to blow exhaust in my face. I think they're just idiots who are trying to intimidate us and show that the road belongs to them.
