Just watched a piece about the new regulations to limit the numbers of pedicabs in New York, I wasn't aware they are as popular as they are. Seems like they would be a good alternative to some of the motorized transportation but City Hall is about to limit their use. Any of you New York Libbies have any experience or thoughts on them?

It's Clinton's fault.

I was in New York 14yrs ago, took a yellow cab ride that rivaled the best in the world for sheer white knuckle adrenaline...never saw any pedicabs tho....seems dumb to limit them but then again with politicians one never knows who is pulling the strings

they looked like they would be interesting and a fun way to get around. Currently there are about 650 and the city wants to cut that in half. The riders like them and the drivers claim they are the answer to congestion because they go around it. Looks like a hard dollar though. :)

I would think it be pressure from Taxicab / bus driver unions (if those exist..I assume they do) and pressure on the mayor's office to squash transportation alternatives...just guessin.

but I'm sure it still has something to do with Clinton and the BJ told around the world. :)

You'd have more credibility if you claimed Al Gore invented it. :)

The problem with the pedicabs is that they are unregulated. The city wants to limit their number because they need insurance. Right now if you get hit riding one--or hit by one, you are SOL in terms of coverage.

I am on my second busines in NY. When I ran my dog walking company I was bonded and insured and my current biz has all the regulations in place. It protects everyone here. It would be nice to believe in some kind of free market, let everyone do business and let God sort it out. But in New York that leads to massive overcrowding.

I am all for pedicabs, mind you. I would take one over those poor horses any day. The cabbies, believe it or not I have a lot of respect for them, I have only had one try to kill me over the years.

It is my intention to come to New York next summer and attend a Yankee game before they tear the stadium down. I thought one of those cabs might be a neat way to make a short trip.

Yes. No doubt that money is behind this, as is usually the case.

Take one through Central Park. A good rider will tell you lots of interesting facts about the construction, it is way cheaper than a horse. You will get to watch hundreds of fund managers whiz by on their Serottas. At the end of the ride you can go to the zoo, and even walk up to the met if you are feeling ambitious.

Sounds like a great idea, part of the news cast talked about Central Park and I thought that might be a good way to see it.

I would suggest getting one outside Tavern on the Green. They seem to hang out there.

To keep this in the PO forum and from getting to civil...you can also take a stroll through the Museum of Natural History beforehand. You can marvel at what a public institution can do, and also at the fact they only get around 20% of their money through admissions. The rest comes through public and private funding. There is a great exhibit on evolution.....

there, now I feel better.

Thanks for your interest and input. I printed this page and if I actually get to go I will certainly keep your suggestions in mind. I think the Museum would be great, thanks again.
