View Full Version : tt helmet suggestions
dealex 11-09-2007, 07:14 AM So I have been using an old Louis Garneau tt helmet for the last few years and I have decided that it is time for a new one. I have been looking through the reviews and forums and haven't really found too many tt helmet threads so if i missed one please just put in the url. But to the helmets I have narrowed it down the the Rudy Project Syton Open the Giro Advantage 2 or the Lois Garneau Rocket. I don't really care what they look like just how well they perform. Anyone out there have any suggestions or have used any if these helmets?
Thanks
uzziefly 11-09-2007, 09:03 AM I'd personally go with Giro coz I love their Atmos and it fits me well.
And it's ventilation system is pretty good too I reckon (for the Advantage)

Pretty sure I read over on slowtwitch that the rudy project helmet hasn't tested out so well (not to mention that those detachable sideburn things are really ugly, even in the dorky realm of TT helmets). I'd look a the Giro, the Bell, or the LG Rocket. If your current LG helmet fits your head OK, the Rocket would definitely be a good choice.
Fixed 11-09-2007, 10:44 AM I have a Giro A2 and a LG Chrono. I use the Chono for longer events, training, or hotter weather, and the Giro for "real" time trials. Both fit very well. The Chrono is a lot cooler, as it does not cover the ears. I have not, of course, been able to quantify any drag differences.
I would feel foolish using the Giro for endurance rides, too. Just can't use that helmet under 25 mph.
The Giro comes in lots of cool color schemes, if that matters.
wasfast 11-09-2007, 11:17 AM I don't seem to recall seeing the Bell on many websites. Anyone bought one? The LG and Giro seem common.

wasfast 11-09-2007, 12:43 PM I don't see the Bell on the Bike Sport Michigan link you provided. Did I miss it somehow?
A Google search seems to only find it on Eurpoean sites, perhaps it's not approved for US.
cdhbrad 11-09-2007, 12:50 PM You may also want to consider a Spiuk Kronos. I've had the Louis Garneu and Limar TT helmets and never really liked either. I bought a Spiuk Nexion road helmet after crashing a Giro Pnuemo earlier this year and it fit really well. I then read about the Kronos and it uses the same internal fit system, so I had my LBS get me one and its great. According to their advertising info, its the same helmet as used by the pro teams sponsored by Spiuk, not that I really care about that. Of the three I've tried, the Spiuk fits me the best. List price is $220.
Kris Flatlander 11-09-2007, 03:18 PM I use a Giro Advantage2. I found that a medium fit a bit small on my head (ears poking out) so I went for a Large and it fits like a dream with the RocLoc. It also fits well along my back in my aero position
The Flash 11-10-2007, 03:53 AM I've got a big head, so only the Rocket and Advantage fit me. The Rocket seems very aero and the eyeshield is very nice, but the covers over the ears don't come down as much, so it is quite noisy. The Advantage does not seem as aero, but fits very well, has better ventilation and it quieter. No eyeshield option on it...

Do you have any fogging issues with the eyeshield?
The Flash 11-10-2007, 09:48 AM None....
Biggest issue was not wearing some type of headband to absorb sweat. Down here in Florida, most of our TT's are in the 90's, so you get a lot of sweat in there. Now as aero as it looks, I have read other accounts that this causes a low pressure zone behind it which may actually slow you down. This was allegedly tested in a wind tunnel, but I only have hearsay to go on. Try the "Need for Speed" forums on westwoodvelo.com or the Performance forum on BikeTechReview.com for some more reading...

bikerbrian 11-10-2007, 05:22 PM The bell isn't approved in the U.S. and therefore cannot legally be sold by stores in the US. It is however legal to use in uscf races so if you order it form overseas you can legally use it in these races. I have one and really like it.
dealex 11-11-2007, 06:51 AM Thanks for thall the help guys, I think im leaning towards getting the LG Rocket, I checked them out at a lbs and it fit a little better then the giro one did
The Flash 11-11-2007, 10:19 AM You'll be really happy with it! Is it the 2007 or 2008 model? I think the '08 has larger vents which would be nice in a 40k, and could be taped over for something short.

feathers mcgraw 11-12-2007, 06:41 AM I built a silly little rig to test helmets.

Spiuk fastest, Giro slowest. Methodology VERY suspect.

Do you think the vents in the Giro is what is causing it to be slower? I have both helmets and am wondering which one to keep. I think the Rocket fits my back better and even with some time loss, I still like the visor. The Advantage fits lower on my head and is more snug.
I'm thinking I just need to get the Uvex.....

feathers mcgraw 11-12-2007, 07:45 AM Gerard Vroomen made a comment to the effect that the more boring the shape, the more streamlined. So, maybe it is the vents. I also hear that visors don't help.
dealex 11-12-2007, 09:04 AM I wold think the visors would help. Because when you have a visor its a clean surface area infront of your face that goes smoothly back into the helmet. When you glasses there are a lot more changes in surface causing more areas for wind to get "held up in" Thats my thought I have no idea if there is any areo advantage to having a visor that just kinda makes sense...
uzziefly 11-12-2007, 09:20 AM Visors and shades make it slower but visors are faster than without em and with just plain shades.
You could skip it, but hey, at that speeds, or for that matter, any speed, you'd not want any dirt into your eyes.
FWIW, I think the Advantage is the best helmet in that it's the coolest helmet based on it's ventilation system. I'd take comfort over a more aero helmet anytime. I think a helmet that cools my head and allows me to sweat a fair amount less would make me able to ride harder and faster for a longer period of time vs. a more aero helmet that's hot as hell.
So, definitely, the advantage offers an, advantage so to speak. Though I wonder why Giro hasn't done anything to improve the aero features of the helmet. I guess they choose ventilation which I'm sure goes well with the riders.
Flash, I'd keep the Advantage if I were you, especially since you race in hot conditions. I don't have the Advantage but plan on getting one once I get my TT frame.
Just my 2cents. YMMV.
