Hello all,
I am looking at a Deda stem (), well to be honest b/c it looks darn cool. However, my preferred bar is not a deda and therefore does not have the 31.7 specified clamp diameter. I did a search and found this thread (http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=106511&highlight=Deda+stem) which states a deda bar will work in a 31.8 stem, but does not discuss whether a 31.8 bar will SAFELY work/fit in a 31.7 stem.
Insights please :D
The only thing that would make this combo unsafe, is if the stem diameter was small enough to create line contact with the bar at the leading edges of the stem and face plate. If you insert the bars into the stem and faceplate by hand, you should be able to feel if there's resistance or "pinching" at these edges, before the bar contacts the back of the stem or front of the faceplate. If there is, then filing a small chamfer along each of the edges should eliminate the pinch and insure safety.

All over sized bars/stems measure 1-1/4". Converted to metric it measures 31.75 mm. Some companies round this number down to 31.7 and others round up to 31.8. Relax, the true measure is the same.

I'd be careful. I believe the Modolo carbon bar is a different size and if you search this forum, some people complained they wouldn't warrantee 'em because they cracked.
Size does matter.
A tenth of a milimeter seems insignificant, but from a mfg perspective, it matters.
FWIW, I'm using carbonlord bars, and they're totally awesome. Comfortable, approx 5 different comfortable hand position, and flat tops, which are super for my fore-arms in my feaux TT position. They're lighter than my older alum bars, and still stiff.
They look identical to stella, and token.

I am currently using the Deda Newton stem with FSA's WingPro Compact handlebar... no problems. I originally had the Newton handlebar to match, but my hand didn't fit the shallow bend as I had hoped. The FSA compact bend is amazing! I have bigger palms and shorter fingers, and the bar fits like a glove. I love the Newton stem as well... bomb proof and really stiff. So far it has proven to be a great combo.

Thanks to all who posted and an extra to boysa for including an applied example. I have much to consider now, thank you!
