Hey Guys,
So i thought i was all set but i guess not.
I am going to ship my bike and race wheels out to my hotel in Kansas City, but i cannot fit two pairs of wheels in the box so my pit wheels will go. I was hoping to gate check my pit wheels(like a baby carrige) but the tsa will confiscate them if they have any oil residue on them. I dont want to pay to ship them, should i trust the airlines in with them in cardboard box? Any suggestions?

If you gan get an actual cardboard wheel box from the bike shop, fantastic. If you just throw them in a box, maybe not so good. I have a padded wheel case that I've never had a problem with. When you pack them in a box I like to make a fake cardboard disc wheel cover for each side and pad the wheel with a canvas bag my wive made me a long time ago. I would think wrapped in bubble wrap in a box would be good too. You have to watch your measurements too or you will fall into the dreaded "oversize" and have to pay an upcharge.
Kind of late now , but I have also seen people make pretty good wheel boxes out of the plastic display board that looks like cardboard only white plastic. I would question the gate check thing as they seem to get handled worse than regular baggage with all the buggys and wheelchairs.

yeah,
i should talk them i guess. If i roll my race wheels pre race(knock on wood for me please) i dont know if i can start on their stuff.
I cannot say enough about how helpful SRAM was with neutral support at USGP. Popped the wheel, changed, hooked the brake cable, ran the gears and gave me a push. Treated me like a pro even though I was quite literally DFL in Cat 3. Plus I got to cruise on a Zipp for 4 laps.
If getting your spares down is an issue, go with neutral support. Those guys were awesome at Trenton.

performance has a cheap padded case that's way worth the $. if it turns out you can't swing it, SRAM will take care of you. they gave me a wheel change during Saturday's USGP. last year, mavic did the same at nats.

We took extra carbon tubulars from FSA for the Kona team to Kentucky in a regular cardboard wheel box on a flight, and there were no issues.
