Going fixed, got an old Pinarello road frame. Removed the downtube shifters, but don't want to destroy the frame by angle grinding the remains. Is there a way to 'hide' them or to make them less ugly? What about some chrome plugs or something like that?

Tire valve covers... Check out valve covers from a BMX shop or auto parts store

I've seen dice, bullets, etc....

Not as imaginative as Dave's suggestions, and much more expensive: brake shifter cable stop adapters. You can remove the grey barrel adjusters.

why not leave the levers?

Yes, I would leave the shift levers on to psych other riders.

Leave them on and connect one of them to a bell mounted down by your BB.

Maybe an electric guitar or amp knob would fit. Then your bike would go to eleven!

According to Mr. Red Green, duct tape has a multitude of purposes.

Not my idea, just something I saw. Get dice, drill a hole and glue them on. Inexpensive and would look just fine.

Paint. If you can get some paint that matches fairly well nobody will notice them.

That is a bad idea. Cover them with something, just in case you crash and get "stabbed."

???? So getting impaled by downtube shifter is better?

I just left mine alone. Doesn't seem to have hurt anything.

A down tube shifter won't run sideways into your thigh and tear a big hole. That is the hazard of just leaving the studs.

And, if that's your setting and nothing has gone wrong... doesn't mean that it won't!

Also I have seen the levers notched and turned into a bottle opener.

Check with your LBS and see if they have kept any of the covers that are placed over canti/v-brake studs to protect them during frame/fork shipping. With a little trimming and a bit of adhesive, they'll solve your problem.

how's he gonna do that? seriously, how would the cable be routed? I've never done it, but I suppose you could mount the levers opposite normal so the routing would be up instead of down and then use a bolt on deraileur hanger for a stop.
