i am thinking about getting a saris truck bike rack. do you guys leave your trunk racks on your car all the time? or do you take it off when you're not using it? basically just want to know if there any risk of it getting stolen? i know the saris comes on and off quite easily. do they make locks or attachments to keep the rack locked into the trunk??
thanks

I have a Saris. If my bike's not on the car, neither is the rack. There's no practical way to lock it that I'm aware of. I think you can easily lock the "trailer hitch" type racks.

The Saris Bones RS (a newer model) actually does lock onto the back of the car (attaches via some steel straps with a locking ratchet mechanism). You have to use a cable lock to lock the bikes to the rack though. I'm getting one for Christmas, but haven't actually used one yet, so no first-hand experience.

Yes,, the hich mount racks can be locked to the car. The pin that goes through the reciver has a lock on it.

I can lock my Bones to the bumper mounts with a long cable lock...I run it through the center of the "tube" the "legs" and "bike carrier arms" attach too. BUT.......generally I don't use a rack because I have a little pick-em-up with a topper. The Bones really does not work well on my wife's car...in it's defense, I just hate the car for any number of other reasons too.....

You can take a long cable lock and also run the cable through the frame and then through any eyelet on the hitch, or something else that is welded on your car. So, technically they might find a way to steal my rack, but the bike is staying with the car.

I actually have a HUGE motorcycle chain lock (the links are all rubberized- and it weighs about 40lbs.) that I use if I ever have to leave my bike locked on my car for a period of time. Since the chain is about as wide as the tubes on the frame, I feel like its size alone deters would be thieves. (although I don't drive around with this thing around my bike)
