I just bought a new Giant TCR this past weekend. When I got home, I noticed a small area on the seat tube right under the top tube where the paint has been chipped. Now, I know scratches are normal, but this is a new bike and this scratch is deep. I am very upset with myself for not noticing in the bike shop. I am confident that it happened at the shop because when I went down to test ride the bike, I fully inspected it and it was clean. Then I went back the next week to buy it and noticed the scratch when I got home. Anyway, I guess my question is this. After I take the bike back today and they tell me that since I didn't notice it when I bought it that it's my problem, does anyone know of any way to fix something like this? Maybe some kind of clear epoxy to cover the area so the aluminum is still protected?

Happy riding!

Nail polish or autmotive touch-up paint can usually be found in a color that's close enough for small touch-ups. Clean the damaged area before applying paint. Silicon wax and grease remover "Prep-Sol" is ideal, but lacquer thinner will do. Something small like a toothpick may be required to apply the small amount required. If you get too much on, you can always wipe it back off with lacquer thinner.

Test an inconspicuous spot, like under the bottom bracket, to be sure that the lacquer thinner doesn't damage the paint. If it does, it's a cheap paint job.

with and aluminum frame i wouldnt worry about it too much, unlike steel when aluminum oxidizes it forms kind of a shell over the surface that keeps the metal under it from oxidizing. Rust as we know flakes away, aluminum doesnt do that. My friend has ridden a bare aluminum frame for 10 years or so now... no problems.. i wouldnt worrry about protecting the metal just the look of your ride

On the bright side, now you wont feel as bad when you put the next scratch on it
