Starliner 01-09-2008, 08:31 PM Skimming thru the 'Ohbama' thread made me sick. Sick that anyone responded. What really made me sick was that this forum allows new and unknown posters to come out of nowhere and make a mockery of things that deserve better. I'm not trying to appear more moral, more right, etc. than anyone here - I'm just saying that if this kind of drivel is allowed to flourish here, I'm gone.
This is an important period coming up, with the coming election. I want substance here, now.
I'm asking the higher ups of this website to require that anybody posting here have at a minimum 60 posts made elsewhere on this website.

Wow, great post.
Say do you keep watching TV shows that you don't like, or keep listening to radio programs that offend you?
Cause, I suppose instead of trying to fix the world you could just mind your own business, and let the people that want to discuss things have an opportunity to do so.
I take it that you're not a 1st amendment type. You're more like the old school marm busy body type.
How many posts should you have before you tell everybody else how it's going to be so as to not offend your delicate sensibilities?
Couldn't you just be gone without threatening to leave unless your brand of censorship is put into effect? What happened to just going without the drama.
Again, great post.
SilasCL 01-09-2008, 08:43 PM It's an interesting idea, but one that doesn't really make sense.
People with long posting histories are just as guilty of posting drivel here or anywhere else.

Thank you. Yes I think that's a good thing.

That kind of drivel is legitimate, because the poster is real, not some phony going to a friend or co-worker's computer and posting crap.

problem is, they'll just go and post it in the Lawnje, or in General, and then it'll get moved here anyway....Nice idea, but it would never work.....
Starliner 01-09-2008, 10:12 PM problem is, they'll just go and post it in the Lawnje, or in General, and then it'll get moved here anyway..
It wouldn't be allowed if there was a minimum post requirement. The purpose is to insure that the poster is legitimate - not some phony rabblerouser. This is not censorship. It is just checking membership, where only real members are allowed. Definition of a real member of this bicycle website is someone who has posted elsewhere on RBR for a certain number of posts. Once established as a real member, come in to PO and fire away from whatever point of view one chooses.
thatsmybush 01-10-2008, 03:11 AM An important time? If it so important...let us hope that no one is using things gleened off of the RBR Politics forum as their political junkie outlet. Anyone who does...well is dumb enough to vote for any of the major candidates (dem or rep). Once we come to grips that the RBR Politics is an outlet not a news source the rest falls into place. Which leads too...
The notion that there should be a "minimum" that seems more than a bit absurd. (an absurd notion)... Should we institute similar minimums...when would teh lounjers feel comfortable with a new poster asking to see "feet" or "pie" when should they be allowed to tell someone to "get a mac." If one is to ask advice on wrenching or training...should Kerry Irons' tidbits be off limits until all can see if the poster is legitimate? What about the influx of people that post during Le Tour in the pro forum?
Once someone starts taking RBR Politics seriously...they invariably crack and get sent to time out...sometimes indefinately. This place is meant to be fun...a chance to lock horns and to keep your chops tight...it isn't the place to take uber serious...
No mins...the veteran posters should help police the trolls and not feed them (but sometimes they get bored and cannot help it...in that case...let Hoo sort it out, the owners of this site have placed their faith in him to run a difficult board...no need to put a "drinking age" on PO.

This site has nothing to do with the first amendment, since this is a private site, and the people who run it can allow, or disallow whoever they'd like on here. There are posting rules, and as you know, if you cross said rules, you can be banned for a day, or forever, there have been many that have been.
This site is not about the first amendment at all.

Why don't you just choose the posts you want to read and respond to and leave the others alone? If one is as deep thinking as you seem to be, posts like the one you are complaining about present an opportunity to take that kind of argument apart with humor and truth. If Obama is the choice of the Democratic Party, which I doubt, all of that will become common in discussions leading up to the general election. He and his supporters will have to deal with it because it will resonate and rally the real radical right and just may not be offsetting enough to those that get that lable on a regular basis to matter.

You can ask. Suggest it to gregg directly or in the site feedback forum. Above my pay grade. But that rule might have meant Snake never posted here you know.
As for that thread, when I saw it this morning I did some banning. But you are right, if no one responded to such, things would be better here.
Don't hold your breath though, too many people find trolls an amusement.

I agree. They are an engaging distraction..sometimes anyway.
Len J 01-10-2008, 04:53 AM I've seen some posts from people with under 60 posts that make some of the drivel posted by "regulars" pale.
No need. Don't respond if you don't like it.

I alway thought Snake was a plant from somewhere around the Bush side of things, now that you mention him. Certainly not a bike guy. Isn't this first and foremost a website for cyclists?
My resolution this year for myself is to keep things rolling and simplify. Simplify includes clearing out the clutter. Trolls bring clutter. And Obama is now bringing trolls here, hateful ones. If people here don't mind sifting through that crap, that's their business. I'll just go about mine, and we'll all be clear.

Snake posted on bikes at least once. Way back in the day.
Steelman uses Dedacciai from time to time and might be able to make you a bike in the tubing of your choice. My Steelman is Dedacciai zero but I got it from GVH.
I approve of his taste in bikes.
atpjunkie 01-10-2008, 07:58 AM and if they are an obvious troll maybe Hoo could turn his back on the Ad Hom ban
or maybe Sorelian could come out of the shed and give them a world class tongue lashing
I don't mind a troll if they are a good one
problem is most folks suxxors at it.

IMO, this comes across as condescending towards right leaning posters. I don't think that Snake or for that matter, Steam can be accused of trolling any more than others. There are people who start threads with a definate slant towards a certain ideology. Are these people trolls? They are basically looking for a reaction from a certain group of people and are therefore trolling. Spyderman is a prime example although he has for the moment stepped away from PO.
If you want a forum that only discusses things that support your personal beliefs, that will be difficult to find. Until then, you have to live with the people who troll.
JoeDaddio 01-10-2008, 08:23 AM Let em all in. Hoo's good at throwing down the ban. Even with as much crap as he might get. I may not post much in here any more but I read nearly every thread all the way through. Things get taken care of, and trolls have no real influence. At the very least they serve to get people talking, which is a good thing. What happened before doesn't seem to be too common of an occurrence, and when it does happen, it's taken care of.

and to his/her defense...I don't believe Snake trolls much at all. He's typically mindful and respectful, crass when its required. I have respect for the Snake.
yes, Spydie has been missing...
Live Steam 01-10-2008, 09:42 AM What about a certain IQ level? Are there age restrictions too? You generally seem like a level-headed poster. This is kind' out there though. Sorry, just calling it like I see it.
il sogno 01-10-2008, 09:47 AM I am for letting new people post. Any new poster that posts irresponsibly in PO soon finds out that the regulars here don't take too kindly to those kinds of shenanigans.
AND we have Hoo here to put the hammer down if need be.

Why have you applied what I said about one to a whole group. I never mentioned any others except for Snake, and keep in mind that it was Hoo who initally alluded to Snake's lack of contributions elsewhere, so Snake was the focus of my response. Fact is, I've never seen any posts by Snake outside of PO until recently.
Live Steam 01-10-2008, 10:32 AM I haven't posted in any of the cycling related forums in I can't remember how long. Maybe some TDF stuff, but the general forum? Nope. Not in a long time. Maybe I should be banned :)
Frreed 01-10-2008, 10:41 AM I find this thread most interesting. I read PO often. I have, mostly, quit posting here. There is a decent core of folks who post thought out arguments on either side of the issue. The libs here make me crazy, but I like to read their point of view. The problem as I have experienced is that one or two grenade throwers jump in. Sadly, the best response to grenades is return volley of the same. Soon it is a CF of one liners. The banned folk(s) on the Obama thread degraded what could have been a very reasonable discussion.
For those of you who post regularly and thoughtfully, thank you. For the rest, join me in screaming at your monitor unless you have something positive to add.
Back to my cave.

I'm similar - haven't done much elsewhere either lately. Nonetheless -- you (and I) have been around since before the new RBR eclipsed the old site, with contributions elsewhere as part of the record. We've even met and rode with other RBR's on our respective coasts. We are real.
But - it seems I'm in the minority on this issue. :17:
LiteSpeeder 01-10-2008, 11:14 AM This thread would be hilarious if it weren’t so two-faced. Not a day goes by on this forum when W or Christianity or even Christmas is viciously attacked by regulars on this forum. And yet, the liberals on this forum are fine with it. But, if your boy Obama gets attacked then it’s "drivel". Give me a break!
:p
JoeDaddio 01-10-2008, 11:14 AM I'm having pie with MB and BR and (possibly) HW tonight!
I also ate sandwishes with a bunch of folks. My bike was locked up outside, but I don't think that counts as a ride :)

There was a time when I rode quite a bit and during that time I discovered RBR among other biking forums. I had a different handle then but I didn't post all that much. The reason for that was this forum had a few people who were not all that friendly to newbes and the questions they posted, you may or may not have been one of them. I got embarrased a few times when I posted questions so I quit and just lurked and had my questions answered in posts to others. There are also a few people on RBR with endless patience and from them I got the information I was looking for. Cory was one of those that I can recall. I understood my ignorance and really couldn't make much contribution to the cycling discussions so I just watched and learned. I've had the agressive driver and dog chase experiences and I have learned a great deal about recreational riding both on forums and from riding. I was never fast enough to ride competitively but I enjoy the racing on Outdoor Life when it is on. I have two bikes, one relatively expensive and one that is like an old dog, not worth much but I still love it because it was my first. I have been off the bike for about 4 years now, only a few rides in that time. Maybe things will work out so I can start all over again but if I don't, that won't change who I am or who you are.

I think a couple 30-60 minute rides every week or so ain't a bad thing. I'm snowed in, are you? Come spring when the days get longer, dust off the bike and go for a few spins, just for old times sake.
You'll have fun, you know it. It will do you good, you know that too.

I didn't stop because I wanted to, I had some health problems compounded by some family duties that made it difficult to ride regularly, for a while at all. Yes, I really need to get back to it and I remember that I love it. I'll have to go slow. No, we don't get much snow here at all but the damned wind is relentless.

Been there, in fact been there this past year. Life does get in the way. That's why I said short rides. Sometimes after time away like that I feel like it is not worth riding, what with how out of shape I am. But a spin around the lake, a quick spin down by the riverside, and I always have a smile at the end.
I don't mind winter, actually. I do like time off the bike for a couple months a year to recharge my desire to ride. It's just that this year that couple months is going to be more five for me. Talk about slow!
I should put my snow tires on the commuter and get a ride in. But first, I have to shovel the latest snowfall (and find the wheels with the wide rims the snow tires go on).
Live Steam 01-11-2008, 06:06 AM I have about 250 miles in since June. Thats when I stated the job in Brooklyn. I have about 6 weeks more to completion and then I'm taking a nice long break. The last trip I went on that included my bike was a bout three years ago. I went back to my home town that my family left in the 60's. I rode that bike on pretty much every street that twelve year old boy I was looking for did. Hills that kicked his butt got conquered this time around, one of them hurt me though. Of course, he was about 90 pounds of boy on a 40 pound bike so I had a bit of an advantage over him. We were both on my bike on the downhill part. :)
