Hello all -

I am newbie to road riding and am really enjoying my new bike. It is equipped with a 105 front derailleur and an Ultegra rear with 105 levers. My bik has a double front chainring.

When i am shifting between the two front rings, there is a middle position that doesn;t do anything. I know the levers are compatible with double or triples, so this is probably normal. If I am in the smaller ring and want to shift into the large ring - I push the lever that doubles as a brake lever all the way to the right. While pushing the lever, it passes through another click in the middle that doesn;t do anything (I assume for a triple) and continues all the way to the right, and then to get back into the small ring, I push the inside lever and the derailleur jumps all the way back down.

It has performed perfectly through the first 30 miles and shifts great - I just wanted to make sure this is normal.

Thnks for the information,
ZZ

its perfectly normal.
that "half-shift" position in the middle is for "trimming" the position of the front derailleur. You might have noticed that the chain can rub on the front derailleur if you're in the small chainring and one of the smaller cogs. Shifting to the middle click on the left shifter will move the derailleur to stop the rubbing, but not enough to shift to the big ring.
There should even be another click left in the shifter after you've shifted to the big ring.

Thanks so much for the info -

I thought trimming was just pushing the lever a bit to the side....I cannot wait to ride tomorrow and try it.....I have noticed the rubbing and just assumed that it was time to change to the other ring - but I was concerned with the lack of a wide usable span of gears.

Thanks again for the quick response and help!!!!
