View Full Version : Those new LOOK cleats with the teflon...
nyvram 08-04-2004, 01:03 PM Can anyone get their hands on them? My LBS says it will be 'weeks if not months...' before I can get my hands on some as replacements for my current red squeaky pedals. This sucks. I'm sick of buttering & sanding my cleats and I'm not paying $120 for new pedals. Anyone out there able to get their hands on these yet as replacement parts? They were supposed to be available starting in June.

Dave Hickey 08-04-2004, 01:06 PM I thought I read that these cleats won't work with the old pedals. They will only work with the 2005 pedals. LOOK changed the design.
From VeloNews
"The cleats themselves have been redesigned to provide lower stack height and come with Teflon-impregnated lips and heel for easier entry and exit.
Two versions of the pedal will be available - a $220 chromoly-axle version and a $300 titanium-axle version. The cleats are not interchangeable with previous Look pedals. "
ipaul 08-04-2004, 02:58 PM That's not true. Go to http://www.cx6ti.com/ . The Keo cleats are different from the normal looks and are not compatible, but there will be normal Delta cleats available.
nyvram 08-04-2004, 06:06 PM I'm confused. The site says:
"Look has new, improved versions of their famous three-hole Delta cleats. The new Bi-Material cleats feature Teflon-impregnated inserts, co-molded into the nylon cleats at their engagement points, for smoother entry and exit. The new inserts are also claimed to quell cleat-squeak, and they’ll function as visual wear indicators so you can tell when the cleats are worn out and need replacement."
That seems to indicate to me these are improved versions of the existing Delta cleat design; not something specifically built for the new KEOs. (scratches head)

Look at this link: This is where I read they weren't compatible

I hope your original link is correct. I'd like teflon coated Deltas
2Fast2Furryious 08-04-2004, 07:40 PM wow...unimpressed. still looks like crap to me. and yeah, dave hickey, we you LOVE look, but come on...let's discuss a major redesign because LOOK pedals are a 20+ year old design and are really showing their limitations...and age.
bought a pair in france. Have not made the switch yet, but I hope they make the noise dissapear. I will use the new pair in a race saturday, so then I will know if they fitted or not. to soon to know about the noise though...
big Kat 08-05-2004, 04:51 AM There 2 types of new bi-material cleats. One set for the traditional look pedals and another set for the new Keo pedals. I have seen the new pedals at one of the high end shops in Montreal. All I can say is "COOL". They are crazy light and are smaller then traditional Looks. They are also crazy expensive. The Cr-mo axles are $300 Canadian at the store. The Cleats i think were in the $25 range.
DougSloan 08-05-2004, 06:46 AM Just get some PP206 or CX7 pedals. I have 5 sets of 206 and one CX7, and none of them have *ever* squeeked one bit. They have the plastic that meets the cleat, instead of the metal on many models. No problems whatsoever. The 206 is vastly overlooked. Great pedals for the money (under $100). Yes, I had metal Looks, and they squeeked; I think it was the 296 model.

I have 5 bikes with LOOK pedals and 4 sets of shoes with LOOK cleats. The pedals are range from old Carbon Pro to PP396. None of them squeak.
While I'm a huge fan of LOOK frames, I don't have a real loyalty to LOOK pedals. My main reason for using the pedals is all my shoes and bikes use LOOK and it's too expensive to change. That being said, I'm pretty fanatical about clicks, creaks and squeaks. I would not use LOOK pedals if they squeaked. With 4 sets of shoes, I change cleats on two of them every season. I clean the pedal bodys once per wk and keep the cleats clean.
The only time I had a squeak problem was riding in the rain or when the cleat was worn.

Obviously this is the solution to the infamous Look pedal squeak: Buy a Look bike to put them on. Must be some sort of harmonic force involved.

My next set of pedals will be the Look PP206 model. I just hope they still make them when my old PP247s wear out. I can't seem to wear out my old pedals though. I've actually resolved the squeaking problem with my 247s -- I just sand the cleats periodically where they develop grayish glazing from contacting the pedals. That gets of the squeaking for quite a while, until a glaze develops again.
nyvram 08-05-2004, 08:43 AM Nope, doesn't solve it. I've got a KG-281 bike and my LOOK pedals still squeak. :-)
Course I've had the same set of cleats for 3 years since I'm such a cheap ******* so the fact they're worn out could contribute to the squeakiness.
Interestingly, they stop squeaking if its been a week or so since the last ride. They seem to squeak more when I'm riding every day. Wonder if there's a film of dust or something that builds up to help out. ;-D
schills 08-05-2004, 09:03 AM Clearly there was an isue because look has redesigned the cleat. But I have a pair of 247s, a pair of 357s, a pair of 396s, a pair of CX7s, and a pair of Wellgo Look compatible pedals on my spinning cycle. None of these have ever squeeked.
I have a theory. And I only have one pair of shoes. Maybe my feet don't move as much and that's why they don't squeek. Maybe your foot shouldn't really move in the pedal and folks just need to adjust the cleat on the shoe so they have a fixed angle that is suitable to them. Maybe the float is there because different people need different angles at this key interface, but maybe the angle. . . . whatever it is for different people. . . . should NOT vary through the pedal stroke. I haven't studied this and perhaps I move around as much as anyone, but my pedals have never squeeked.

With the tension set to max, entry is, at times difficult, and exit is always too light and easy to seem secure. It is somewhat of a dilemma. That said, I've never clipped out inadvertantly. Have any suggestions for the "stiff" enty other than down-setting tension?
bimini 08-05-2004, 11:03 AM since I road them on a muddy gravel road. I cleaned them up but they still squeek. My guess is sand or grit got embedded in the plastic and/or metal.

metaphor for life baby, hard to clip in, easy to bail out.
sorry have nothing real to add other than - how long do people expect this teflon coating to last? and is it like the blue bristles on toothbrushes - a premature wear indicator that forces more frequent replacement?
