I'm inconsolable..... Mourey falls after racing strongly at the front. And he was marking Boom's wheel (hat's off to Boom-boom, btw). Suxor major!

Oh, and major props to Stybar. He attacked hard twice and still had one cartridge left for when it mattered. I thought the spluttering flexom explosion off his lips over the finish line was an especially nice touch.

So the favorite won in all four races. Hardly any incidents worth mentioning. Two World Time Trial champions won. Perhaps Cancellara should have entered.

Does Adri Van Der Poel design courses that he would have the best chance of winning? Maybe it makes for good TV, but I'd prefer a bit more skills and tactics. Grit not Crit.

Nothing at all against Belgium, but I am glad that their straggle hold on the title is over.

Good for Boom, hopefully he will stick with cross.

Is one minute between first and 25th more clumped than usual? Grass crit?

jerry_in_VT
01-27-2008, 06:13 AM
ummm, yah. actually no, Gloucester is a grass crit. That was silly. Of course, Mourey still managed to fall off and give Wellens something to talk about.

Big guys with BIG power did well. Wellens had no chance on that course. He is like Page and needs something technical to have a shot.

Col(l)in should graph femur length verses results. Gadret was a bit of a surprise, but he rides Pro Tour road races all summer, so maybe not.

Trebon would have loved it. Too bad he took himself out. At least Compton manned up (hah) and started, albeit with one leg.

Ouch. 23rd for JP probably won't help his sponsorship situation too much for next year.

he will be fine, especially if he has some more solid world cup results. I think he had a problem early on, he switched bikes for some reason. not a great day for him of course, regardless. He is not a power rider anyway, that course looked like Providence only straighter....Trebon should have hung in, he may have had a good day. Dont know if you dont try.

Oh, results - I cant give away all my web secrets now can I.

your hurt, your hurt.. Why risk the rest of the year if you know you're a. injured and won't be albe to do well, b. possibly injure yourself even more.. Katie gave it a whirl, but her big part of the season isn't starting in a few months, where as Trebon does need to be ready for MTB season, his sponsors are counting on it.. I agree though, had he been healthy, it woudl've been fun to see..

As far as Page, we all have courses that suit our strengths, and this one abviously didn't suit his style, can't blame him for that, hopefully potential sponsors will see that and not just have a crap point of view on his performance..

I thought I read/heard (a while back) that his Kona contract was over this year and that he was looking to make a Euro-ish cross move next? Ofcourse this is before US nats and his X-mas Belgie campaign, also interesting that the comments on VN about his withdrawl were made by the Kona manager.

To be honest I think that we have seen the best of Trebon, wish him nothing but the best form here on out. But I don't think he'll be any bigger a player in Euro Cross than he is now.

Look how the Euro's nurse their talents. Kevin Pauwels loses as a junior to (whats that US junior world champs name?) in 2000 or so.
Now he is a solid -pro- cyclo crosser. Look at Albert; Stybar;Simunek ; Franzoi and others.
Trebon could be a good cross racer overseas if he can prepare as they do.
the Euro teams have very little incentive of taking on a US rider, and rather bring their national talents to the top.
Only solution is a US sponsored team. And then, they are still from home for 5 months? A high level US competition is another solution, but the racing seems to take place between 5 guys at the most.
Hope JP and Trebon will be present next year with good sponsors. I never understood why the big US road teams never could sponsor a few crossers (Like Rabobank ?)

Well the only big US pro team was USPS/Discovery and that was mostly in name only not in management or rider composition, the rest are small domestic teams, no?

Seems to me the economic conditions really only exist in the lowlands of Europe and mainly there just in Flanders to attract sponsors. France seems like the logical place to try to grow the sport. Even their two world class riders are roadies doing cross as a side gig in the winter.

An interesting situation is why cross isn't bigger in Italy? Big cycling country, have had top elite riders for a while but there are very few races there.

Let's be honest: cross is considered a bit of a sideshow in all but a few countries. And in the U.S., cycling itself is considered a sideshow.

Even over here in The Netherlands cx is considered something like a freakshow for wannabe cyclists. Don't think Lars Booms victory will change that

Well...the race you guys have in Bakel is a beautiful freak show!
The propaganda view that we Americans have of how big cross is in Europe is blown out of proportion. Yes...it is more "known" in Belgium...but a local High School Thanksgiving football game is bigger in the US....sad but true

The upside is, I was able to race in Nationals/Provdience on the same course as the big boys, then watch them race, all for about the same price it cost to PARK at Gillette stadium.
