Is anyone here using King hubs? If so, are you happy or unhappy with them?

They are indestructible. I personally think they are kind of expensive for what they are.

I have a couple of pairs and they are great. I prefer them for either heavier duty work or off-road riding or both.

Thanks guys - I agree they are pricey, but im trading some other parts for a set. I plan to get them built using CXP-33 rims from a local shop.

There's not much that could kill that build.

I have them on my mountainbike. Since I have other bikes, I parked this one for something like 6 months. When I rode it again the rear hub was not engaging. Googled the problem, dissablembed and re-oiled with ATF. Not really difficult as I am not a mechanic by trade. NIce quality inside and out. (Loud) buzzing sound when freewheeling annoys others but I use that to warn pedestrians am coming.

I have a pair built with Aerohead Velocity rims that I like a lot. They are 28ft and 32rear, so pretty much bombproof. However, I was using them last summer when the nondrive side flange on the rear hub cracked and two spokes came loose. I had bought them used on ebay so I had no idea how old they were. I contacted Chris King and was told to send the hub in for evaluation so they could determine warranty coverage, etc. I was told they would get back with an estimate. About 2 weeks later, the hub shows up in the mail. They had replaced the shell and rebuilt the hub, for free, even though it was more than 5 years old. I consider that to be a great service response. Had the wheel relaced and its good as new. I would definitely consider them if you want a really strong set of hubs and aren't looking for the lightest wheels around.

I've had two mtb wheelsets built up with king hubs and never had any problems with either of them. Very high quality and bulletproof. Never had a set for my road bike, running campy so no deal.

They are expensive, but with that expense you get one of the best engineered hubs ever placed on a bicycle. You also get Kings unbeatable customer service and there is probably no bicycle parts manufacturer that is an environmentally conscious as King.

agreed, they deleted some of their anodized colors because the chemicals for those colors were especially bad.

otoh, they also have a reputation for restrictive dealer agreements, or price fixing.

I have a set of their pink hubs on my commuter. they're overkill, but I do love them.

I'm no mechanic, but I heard an LBS has to invest in some tools to work on Chris King hubs and not every shop has. Something you might ask about.

to completely disassemble a King hub, they have a hub service tool. I have a set of ISO disc hubs on my mtb that have been dead reliable in 4 years of racing. I haven't tried the King hubs on my road bike, but I expect that they would be the only hubs you would need for a verrrry long time!

Cheers!

They are the best.

unless you care about weight...

I have a pair laced to open pro 32s. They came from the 90s from my mountain bike, I had switched to disc brakes, so I took the hubs and had them laced 3X onto Open Pro rims with DT Swiss Competitions. They are by far my favorite wheel. Even more so than the carbon aero clinchers I have.
