View Full Version : What bikes are you newbies riding? UCLA_MCDbio 08-06-2004, 12:14 AM what bikes are you amatuers riding? Suneil 08-06-2004, 04:32 AM A 2004 Specialized S-works E5 w/ultegra kit. ahaile 08-06-2004, 07:49 AM I put mine together from on-line and local deals, and I've got about $450 invested at the moment. Like someone said, fast, good, cheap, pick two. No-name titanium frame (probably Habanero or Salsa) 8-speed 105 group Ouzo Comp fork (big improvement over my previous Nashbar carbon fork) Old Mavic Open 20 rims (crummy) with light Michelin tubes and Veloflex Paves (both good) Candly S pedals (so I can use the same shoes with my mtb) Next planned upgrade is some better wheels -- I'm watching eBay. gogogomoveit 08-06-2004, 08:04 AM Specialized Allez Sport. nice stiff and light frame. Stock with Tiagra/105 mixes...currently saving up money for Dura Ace/Ultegra mixes and DT wheels. deastin 08-06-2004, 08:57 AM what bikes are you amatuers riding? I m riding an '04 Giant TCR 2 composite , the best bike i could get for all my money at the time and havent looked back i HIGHLY recommend one if you can find one as they are in such short supply. Ride On! avant 08-06-2004, 07:43 PM I ride a Fuji Finest bike. The frame is Cro-Moly and I picked it up for 400 bucks. SuperB 08-07-2004, 04:19 PM Tiagra / 105 mix. Just switched to road from mountain, wanted something pretty good in case I liked road, but didn't want to bust the bank in case I didn't like it. Well, I like it. I'll keep riding this baby for a while. pavedroad 08-07-2004, 06:53 PM I started out with a Supergo Special Scattante R550. I was amazed, my first road bike! So light and so fast! I got hit by a car and the bike was demolished. After, I upgraded to a Giant TCR2 composite. I was even more amazed! I only wish I could have ridden the R550 longer to learn the feel of road bikes. That way the wow factor for the TCR would be even greater. fUnkYb0bg 08-08-2004, 06:20 AM All stock, except I switched brands on the Handlebar and Stem (the LBS didn't have the Specialized in my size, the Salsa stuff they put on is fine). I love my bike, taking it to my third race this afternoon. (1 DNF, 1 Flat w/2 to go, race 3 I will finish with the field I think....) Next bike, Cyclocross, wanna keep racing in the winter, looking forward to getting dirty. mrrun2fast 08-08-2004, 10:10 AM I've been riding for over two years, but I'm still riding my first bike- Cannondale R900. woodyak 08-09-2004, 10:01 AM My first bike is coming tomorrow. I'm pretty stoked. I picked up the Supergo Special Scattante R550. Right now I'm riding my wife's Marin which isn't bad either. The problem is it doesn't fit me. After about 30 minutes my hands go numb. I think the frame is too small for me. btw- I'm a newbie to the road but a veteran on the mountain. I ride a decked out Titus Quasi-moto. I hit the trails at least 4 times a week. spyro 08-09-2004, 11:27 AM a 1977 raleigh grand prix, with new wheels and cranks, its too old to be cro mo its just said steel on it before i painted it. Yeah it's made in Taiwan, but full 105 for $850, not bad! magnolialover 09-18-2004, 09:16 AM Long time MTB just purchased first road bike...'04 Felt F70...Love this bike! Yeah it's made in Taiwan, but full 105 for $850, not bad! Taiwan makes good bikes people. Simple as that. A lot of them, in my own humble opinion, are even better than so-called "handmade in the USA" bikes. They've got their stuff down these days. I am a bit prejudiced, as I've been riding Giant road bikes since I was in high school, but have always liked them, and never had any problems. rfiglia 09-18-2004, 01:32 PM im riding a 2000 Trek 2200 105 group The new 2200 comes with Ultegra teamvwracing 09-18-2004, 08:06 PM 2004 Cannondale R1000 and loving it. neuroslug 09-18-2004, 09:31 PM I ride a Santa Cruz Roadster which I've been steadily pouring money into. 2004 Mavic Ksyrium SLs (Conti GP3000s for racing, 4seasons for training) Easton EC90 SL fork Chris King headset 2004 Ritchey WCS stem v3 Kestrel EMS Pro handlebars FSA Team Issue carbon cranks (upgraded because I switched from 175 to 170s) Dura-Ace rear derailleur Speedplay X/2 pedals Fizik Aliante Easton EC70 seatpost The other stuff is Ultegra Pretty nice setup... I don't even want to think of how much $ has gone into this setup... -- n jksu 09-18-2004, 10:07 PM long time mtn biker (old specialized - bridgestone mb3 - now jamis dragon) more seriously road biking this year since most of my co workers road bike. can't beat'em join'em. was on an older 98? caad 2 cannondale/rsx100 ($350 on ebay). pretty good bike actually, pretty light despite age esp after a few upgrades (seatpost, stems, etc.) got an ultegra open pro wheelset to replace the worn out set for $120 on ebay and caught the bug. rode a ton this summer and thought i was ready for a bike with more solid component group and nicer frame... loved the 853 on my dragon, so i was going to go for the same on road. just picked up a 2003 gunnar roadie w/105 on ebay last month for $900 and love the ride. a truly super frame, nice and stiff at the bb but absorbs/damps well. john reignfire22 09-19-2004, 07:54 AM 04' Cannondale had it for like 4 weeks now and it's not bad. Ireally like the ride, but when i get some money I want to get some krysiums elites or something around that range. KevinC 09-19-2004, 09:28 AM [QUOTE=magnolialover]Taiwan makes good bikes people.QUOTE] I appreciate that Magnolialover! That is exactly what my LBS said, but you know how that goes. KevinC 09-19-2004, 09:30 AM Tiagra / 105 mix. Just switched to road from mountain, wanted something pretty good in case I liked road, but didn't want to bust the bank in case I didn't like it. Is hands going numb a good indication of a poor bike fit? I've been assuming it's just something bikers live with. I ride a 2004 Giant OC3 btw, as entry-level as it comes but I've been enjoying the heck out of it. coolcatpete 09-19-2004, 12:10 PM I am a super newb and I am riding a fuji roubaix pro. Pete Magpie 09-19-2004, 04:48 PM Just took up road biking from mt biking...am also a newbie triathlete, having done a couple off-road races. CptKeane 09-22-2004, 10:43 PM I took the plunge for a 2004 Trek 5000T. Originally started w/ desires for the 1500 then the 2100. When I saw the nude carbon of the 5000 I fell in love. I started riding last week and I have so far put in about an hour ride each day. Still working on resolving the seat issue. carter1 09-23-2004, 02:33 AM Orbea Volata with Campy Mirage. I love it. Not a fancy groupo, but I've had no problems, I prefer it to various Shimano groupos (including XT/XTR) that I've had on Mt bikes. My mtb is a custom Titus X 100. arctic hawk 09-23-2004, 11:29 AM 2001 Trek XO1 cyclocross 8spd 12-25 ultegra bar cons & RD RSX FD FSA Energy 50/34 Shimano WH6500 wheels Bontrager bits & pieces & platform pedals!
