I got a pair of hand built wheels from Colorado cyclist back in 1998 and they were a great set of wheels. Has anyone used the for hand built wheels lately? How about Excel sports?

Both still have good reputations, and for equivalent performance, their wheels are much cheaper than all those factory boutique wheels.

I bought a set from them for my mtn bike last spring. They did a fantastic job, & were great on the phone helping me decide plus it was a pretty good price.

I have had two sets of wheels from Excel. I still have the front wheel from the first set I bought in 1999. The rear wheel lasted around 40K until the hub flange broke. It was true until then. The front has never been trued. The second set of wheels was fine in the front but the back wheel had a stripped nipple that went incredibly out of true on the first ride. The LBS fixed it. Both wheelsets used chorus hubs 3X32 with CPX 33 on the first set and open pro on the second.

Joe Young builds a nice wheel www.youngwheels.com. I have a wheelset with velocity rims, supercomp spokes, and PW hubs. PW hubs are so smooth.

I had a set of excel wheels once, they were built very well, and I know many others with there wheels. Plus like someone else said, much cheaper than some boutique wheels

I had Colorado Cyclist build a back up race wheel set for me last season. Mavic reflex laced 3X to 32h Ultegra hubs. The wheels were nice and true with even tension. I'd order from them again.

DA/ Open Pros from Excel back in '03. $300. Never had to touch them. 5000+ miles then sold them.

Record/CXP-33s from Colorado Cyclist in '06. $425 IIRC. About 3200 miles so far. Haven't touched them yet. I plan to use them for many seasons to come.

Both great shops to deal with. I slightly prefer Excel for their wider range of Campy stuff. I went with CC on the last build because they had more spoke choices.

Colorado made me a set for my MTB using 819 rims and Chris Kings. Love them! Not a single issue.

I have also used Colorado Cyclist hand built rims bought back in the late 90's. Still have them, No complaints and would buy from them again. Maybe soon.
