I have an older road bike that I would like to do some dirt road riding on. Could somebody suggest a tire with some tread and maybe a size. Thanks. Steel frame and calliper brakes.

Is the rim size 27" or 700C? If 700, then you can try to fit some cross tires in there. It depends on what sort of clearance you have. Some hybrid tires have a decent tread for basic trails.
