View Full Version : wheel build ideas?

I've been thinking for a while about some new handbuilts, and I think I've finally decided on the build: tune mig 70 /mag 180 hubs, alex crostini 3.1 (3.2 rear), and cx-rays (maybe lazer or dt revolutions - what's the difference?)
I'm 6'1", 160lbs, so not heavy, but I want a wheelset that's reasonably stiff.
I'm thinking 24f/28r spokes, but what about the pattern? I think radial front should be OK, but what about the rear? 3-cross both sides? any other ideas?
From what I've read here and other places, this should get me a good wheelset, roughly 1400g, and here in Spain I think it'll work out at about 700-750 euros.
How does this build sound? Any suggestions? I've been riding neutrons for 2 years - how can I expect these handbuilts to compare to them?

thanks,

foz

Go for it, I think they will be great. I think you are looking at about 1300 grams.
700 to 750 euros? That's bit pricy. Maybe because the dollar is weak but I think you can get that in US for cheaper price although the shipping will be higher and you may have to pay additional tax...
There are several excellent wheel builder here.
rruff at http://www.whitemountainwheels.com/index.html come to mind.

Since posting I found juanmoretime's thread from a while ago: http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=55489&highlight=crostini These are exactly the same wheels I was asking about, and come in under 1300g. 700-750 euros is just a guess, but the hubs are just short of 400 euro a pair here, I'm not sure about rims, but on http://www.rouesartisanales.com they're 90 euros each, I think the spokes will set me back 40 or 50 euros, that's 620 euros. maybe I was a bit over with my estimate, but that just means I've got some left over for skewers! I'm still wondering about the rear lacing - 3 cross both sides, or NDS radial maybe?

Tune doesn't warranty their rear hub for radial. I'd do 3x DS and 2x NDS, or 2x both sides. Should be some nice wheels!

Thanks, I didn't know that. I assumed that because the warranty covers front radial, that it would cover rear radial too...
