If you think you're going to keep riding, then go with as much bike as you can afford. If you're not sure, go with anything that will get you riding.

I'd go with the Giant. You can test ride it, a GOOD bike shop will make sure it fits you and you'll get support after the sale for any problems or adjustments that need to be made. You also won't have to deal with a bike possibly damaged during shipping or who knows what else. You just never know what condition a used bike will be in until you get it out of the box. And then- no bike shop support in case of problems. Also- do you KNOW the Cannondale will fit? If you pay $100 and it doesn't fit it's a bad deal. And IMO '98 was a long time ago for an entry level road bike. I had a '99 Trek 2000 w/ RSX. Not a very impressive group. Also check out Specialized Allez ($600) and Fuji has a model for $500 + . '04 models will go on close-out soon. You might be able to find a deal. Good luck.

PS -If you get serious and want to sell on the Cannondale you'll get nothing. If you want to sell the Giant on after a year or so (if in good condition) you'll get a reasonable return.
