View Full Version : What's going to be a more compliant ride / 2007 Tarmac SL, or 2008 Pro?
meanderingmtbiker 02-12-2008, 10:16 PM Let's say I could get a used '07 SL for a bit more than the '08 Pro. I test rode an '08 Expert, and it was great. Are the SL's just laterally stiffer, or also going to be a harsher ride?
I'm a bit of a road noob, all about MTB at the moment, so feel free to deluge with details if anyone feels inspired.
Thanks,

johnmyster 02-19-2008, 11:31 AM The pro is a good bike. I wouldn't pay more for a used '07 SL without a warranty than an '08 pro with. There's only a marginal difference between the two setups anyhow. They come from the same mold.

Why look further??
meanderingmtbiker 02-19-2008, 09:53 PM Thanks guys.
I was using the Expert as a benchmark just cause its the same frame as the pro...or same code Specialized applies to the type of carbon. So the difference between the Pro and Expert is components, and the Pro has those swanky carbon cranks. The Roval wheels are a bit of a question mark, but that's what warranty is for. The SL I saw for sale had some Mavic ES's on it, which was attractive. Looks like if the finances end up pointing to 'yes', the Pro might end up being my ride!
Thanks!

Coolhand 02-21-2008, 10:26 AM The Pro is really nice.
roadbike1 02-21-2008, 11:12 AM I have a 07 Tarmac Pro frame. Great frame, fantastic price $900.00
weiler.michael 02-21-2008, 05:47 PM In terms of compliant ride, I doubt you would be able to notice a discernable difference. The pro carbon isn't as stiff as the SL (8r vs 10r carbon), but unless you are Boonen cranking out massive watts or 250lbs, you arn't going to notice. On top of that, both have slim and compliant seat stays so I imagine they both have very similar comfort levels.
In my opinion, go with a new 08 pro - you know you are getting a fresh rig, no hidden problems, plus it sounds like the pro is less expensive than the used 07 SL you are interested in.

It's neither my money nor my thread, but I'm just curious.. with the '08 Pro and Expert sharing the same frameset, and with a price difference of 1K for, in essence, upgraded wheels on the Pro, why are people opting for the Pro over the Expert? Weight? Carbon Crankset? And yes, I realize this comparison is different than the OP's, as I said, just curious..
weiler.michael 02-21-2008, 07:19 PM While the wheels are the major upgrade, it is the little things that make the difference. Dura-Ace shifters, ultegra brakes (105s on the ultegra, I know makes no sense), carbon bars, titanium sworks stem and of course the s-works carbon crankset. The wheels and the crankset alone make up in the difference, everything else is sugar coating.
That being said, if you had a nice set of wheels laying around, and didn't mind the crankset, then rock on with the expert, throw on your own wheels and save a grand.
