View Full Version : $1800.00 brakes!!!!!!!
ciclisto 02-14-2008, 06:34 PM yes you read it correctly, on ebay a set of c record campy deltas NOS for $1775.00 the price of my first car...............................yes there is inflation or flatulence of the brain, there are 14 bidders so far so hurry .................................c
yankeesuperfan 02-16-2008, 07:14 PM Wow that's like the cost of my complete bike
weiwentg 02-16-2008, 07:55 PM they said the Zero Gravity brakes were expensive.
Squeegy200 02-16-2008, 10:56 PM The campagnolo fanatics on eBay are unbelievable. I occasionally see the production deltas go for around $200, then sometimes $500.
Then I see 1960s derailleurs for $4000 or seatpost collars for $3000. A week later there are 5 or six of them up for auction for $20.
The prototype deltas are now over $2500

Steel Ridr 02-19-2008, 04:33 PM Does Campagnolo have a patent on this design? I was wondering if another component manufacturer could or would reproduce these brakes if there is still a demand for them, perhaps under license if Campy is unwilling make them again.
MaestroXC 02-19-2008, 04:48 PM There's nothing good about the design.
The only reason people want them is because they're finicky, Campy, and no longer made. If anyone started producing them again, prices would plummet. Although I'm sure a lot of "urban" riders would love to get a purple ano'd pair.
what is it about this board that some people constantly feel the need to complain about how others spend their money? Is $1,800 for an old pair of brakes any worse than $1,800 for an old baseball card? Neither has any "intrinsic" value, but both may have some collecter value, or maybe they are just nostalgic for someone. Anyway, who cares if someone wants to spend money differently than you do? Why the "flatulance of the brain" comments? No one said you had to buy them.

I would beg to differ. I wouldn't pay the prices that are currently on eBay, but there are a number of things that make Deltas worth owning.
The deltas have a reputation amongst owners as one of the best modulating brake caliper designs. I also appreciate the small adjustment screws on each side of the pad which made for the easiest toe-in of any brakes I've ever used.
I climbed ~15k feet this past week and I had to descend those same mountains--some 19% grades according to our Garmin GPS. The deltas never faded or lost ability to stop when hot. This was especially beneficial when descending down gravel covered roads from the recent rains.
Despite their detractions, the best reason for owning Delta brakes is the excessive amount of attention the bike gets from Cyclists and NON-cyclists.
It's arguably one of the most intriguing pieces of bike gear in the last 50 years.

It just amazes me that people will complain about the aesthetics of the M5 brakes (http://www.excelsports.com/image/M5%20Brakes%20Calipers.jpg) but then those ugly-ass Campy's will sell for >$3k
Then again, if I had $15,000 wheels (http://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/article/how-much-lew-racings-us15000-wheels-12670) I'd probably insist on $3,000 brakes for them!

But if you read carefully you'll notice that the buyer will get $10 back with his new ebay mastercard.
Kuma601 02-20-2008, 09:24 PM WOW
I'm beyond words seeing that auction.
cyclust 02-20-2008, 10:48 PM It's no different than the Barnett-Jackson auto auction. If there are a bunch of people with lots and lots of dipsosable income who all want something of very limited quanity, quess what happens? I'm sure if you forced all those bidders to walk thru death valley in mid august you could fetch a similar price for a ice cold bottle of water. It's the law of supply and demand. Tainted by the fact that there are a lot of people around who obviously haven't had to work all that hard for the piles of money they have. Trust me, if someone had to earn a 50 cents an hour digging coal as my grandfather did just to feed his family, they wouldn't drop $3k on a set of brakes for thier bicycle. They'd probably just stop Fred Flinstone style!
ciclisto 02-20-2008, 11:28 PM come on . it was worth it to tune it to this auction for $3200 brakes. no?

Those brakes would look good on my Wal-Mart GMC Denali!
Cheers! 02-23-2008, 11:49 AM Interesting. Is there a hidden spring that provides the brakes to open up again once contracted and tension from the cable is released?
